Show me your 1983 SC Cabriolet!

Hello, I am searching for an '83 911 SC Cabriolet. All I seem to find are red, black or white (not that that is a problem ). But I am curious as to what other factory original colors are lurking out there. Also, I am looking to buy an 83 Cab when the right one comes along.

Post photos if you have them! Even black, white and red!

Cheers,
Michael

Any photos of that black on burgundy? I would love to find a black on red or a white on red 83 Cab! Only seen 1 white on red and it is in Germany.

cheers,
Michael

Pics of my '83 cab are in this thread. The color is moss green metallic and it's right in the middle of the 1,700 or so U.S. 1983 model year production cabriolets.

Brian, I like it! Nice color. How is it coming long?

I've been tabulating a list of VINs and colors with the goal of starting an SC Cabriolet Registry. I'd love to have the details on yours (VIN, color code, interior color/material, top color, mileage, etc).

So far, Black and Guards Red are the overwhelming winners, followed by Arctic White. The "novel" colors are Moss Green Metallic (yours), Quartz Blue Metallic, Champaign, Burgundy (but I suspect it is actually Ruby) and silver. The vast majority of these have black leather interiors.

These are all US VINs, I am collecting ROW VINs as they come up - there seem to be more Arctic White ROW Cabs.

cheers,
Michael

Hey, Michael, thanks, my cab is coming along great. I'm reassembling the engine and once I get that back in I'll start sorting the cosmetic issues. I hope to be driving her by the Fourth of July.

Your idea for an SC Cabriolet Registry is most excellent! We are stewards of one-year wonders that came at a turning point in Porsche's -- and the 911s -- history. The development and production of the SC Cabriolet was a very strong statement by Zuffenhausen that the 911 had a long-term future following a few years of uncertainty about whether it would it even be around.

One question about SC Cabriolets: It seems I read somewhere that the U.S. versions all shipped with full-leather interiors and sport seats. Mine is that way -- moss green metallic exterior and black leather interior. I understand this was a way of raising the sticker price well above the other models.

Also, the way I understand it, the first-year cabs weren't all that easy to get -- like you had to be a well-known customer or willing to jump through various hoops to get one. It would be interesting to confirm more of that story.

Anyway, '83 cabs are special cars.

Brian

Brian, I would love to get your VIN, milage, contact info and top color for my registry!

I have VINs for 41 cars now and tracking down 10 more cars that I know exist and have contacted the owners. Every one of them has full leather seats. It is amazing how many Black and Guards Reds there are!

16 of the 51 are Guards Red (all except 2 with Black interiors, the other 2 are tan)
11 of the 51 are Black (all except 1 has Black interior, it has Red)
9 of the 51 are Grand Prix White (most have black interiors, 2 have Burgundy, 1 has blue, 1 has white, 1 has brown)

I am planning to put up a web site and go through the PCA process for a recognized registry. I wold like to do this registry different than the others - a Wiki page for each car so the owner can add photos and their own description. Also an "owner private area" where you can keep records, restoration info, etc online in an easy to use and get to place.

Currently, the earliest car I have is #86, a Guards Red car and the latest is 1775 a Black car.

Cheers,
Michael

John, Yes I have. Thanks for the pointer.

I am also looking for color charts for paint and interiors. I collect early Porsche marketing literature and have a complete set for all of the early 911s and 912s up to 1973. Haven's seen much for SC sales literature yet.

cheers,
Michael

Brian (and all), I have continued to collect VINs and info on the 83 SC Cabs. I would like to grab a domain name for the web site asap. I was thinking of one of the following and would love to get your feedback on it:

911SCCabrioletRegistry.org or .com

911SCCabRegistry.org or .com

SCCabRegistry.org or .com

83CabRegistry.org or .com

Or any other recommendations?

I have collected a nice set of Porsche literature, including a really cool lime green covered "911SC Cabriolet Service Information" manual which is 36 pages. I plan to scan all of these and include in a library on the site.

I've also now interviewed 2 original owners of 83 cabs to hear their stories on how they got the car. In both cases, they were prior Porsche owners and getting the Cab was a "by invitation" from their dealer. It is also true that the 83 Cabs all had leather interiors and sport seats. I have contacted Porsche NA to see if I can get some background info for the Registry. Kind of fun detective work.

In my surfing, I did come across a really beautiful yellow cab that sold last year. Not sure if it is a factory or custom from the factory color. I am trying to track down the owner of that one.

Once I have the site set up, I will make a formal announcement. My plan is to provide a private member area so each owner can keep records, links and other info - like a personal 83 cab home page - that only they can see.

Let me know if there are other features or content that I should consider adding.

Cheers,
Michael

cheers,
Michael

Mike,

Do you have the article from "Fixen Der Porsche" about the SC cabrio when it first came out?

If not, I can send you a scanned copy.

John, I would love to get a copy of that "Fixen Der Porsche" article you mentioned! I'll PM you my email address.

Well, I found my 83 Cab and the deal is done. Now I just wait for it to get shipped from CA to its new home with me!

It is Moss Green Metallic over tan leather seats, brown carpet and brown leather dash. The interesting thing is that the paint code is Y8V9 - which is Ice Green Metallic. The PO had the car for 9 years and had it repainted 5 years ago - he swears he kept the color original and that it has not been repainted yet. The shop that did the PPI has cared for this car for 17 years and also always remembered it as this much darker green. I plan to call Porsche and/or order a CoA. THe interior code is 75. Anyone have any ideas?

cheers,
Michael

Ok, I've started a photo gallery for the 83 Cab with photos the PO emailed me. I haven't been notified when Intercity is going to pick it up for delivery yet. The waiting is the hardest part! Click the link in my signature to see what I have so far.

Michael, congrats on your "new" cabriolet and welcome to the '83 cab club!

Cool pics. One small correction. The paint code for moss green metallic is L20C.

I see from the owner's manual pic that yours had a born-on (delivery to the first owner) date of June 13, 1983. I thought the last four digits of my VIN was in the 800s, like yours, but now I'm not so sure because mine was delivered to the first owner in September 1983.

Naturally, I've been looking to check this out, but I can't find my cab notebook. I'll try to run this information down this weekend.

How are you doing on setting up the PCA registry?

Thanks again for posting the pics. It looks like you've got a solid SC to enjoy!

Dan, nice car!

Brian, I fixed the paint code # (L20C). I am dying to find out if it is really supposed to be Ice Green Metallic though!

I am almost ready to take the 83 cab registry site live. I just need to come up with a name and do a bit more scanning of docs that I have.

Cheers,
Michael

Thanks Michael,

According to the birth cert from PCNA, the car is original with the exception of: A/C, the speed-o (mph not kph), radio and wheels (I have the fuchs, need to send out for refinish). Real history is a challenge as she is an RoW serial #957.

You can also contact other Cab owners by getting info at:

Hey, Michael.

Here's an interesting thing. Your warranty voucher page -- that's from your owner's manual, right? -- doesn't look like mine. On mine the delivered-on date is a series of boxes in Euro style for day of the week, month and year. The rest of the page looks the same.

Anyway, my car was delivered to the first owner on Sept. 3, 1983, with 125 miles on the odometer.

Also, I checked my VIN and my U.S.-cab is No. 876. Yours is 830. That doesn't seem like that huge a number between a June and September delivery. Curious, huh?

So now we know the later Carrera-style engine cases came in somewhere between 830 and 876 for the U.S. cars, right?

Brian
