Hopefully it wasn't a clean example that he started with.
He should have started with a Vette first...

My guess was that conversion was done in the 1980's when that sort of thing was cool to do

Not only was it likely done in the 1980s, it was also done when longhoods were cheap. In that period of time between a car being "current" and a "classic" is the time of abuse. This is just another example.
