Price Check - 1976 912E

Black over tan.
150xxx miles.
Very well documented.
Rebuild eng and trans at 13xxxxmiles
Repainted once with a decent but not great paint job
Fuchs
Car was featured in excellence once for breaking a land speed record in its class (or something like that).

Let me know what you think.

These 912's seem to be all over the place with regards to value.

It's hard to guess values without really good pics, but with a relatively fresh engine and trans, it could be worth maybe $8000...? A '76 911 seems to bring $9000 to $12k for a car with miles and similar condition...

Values are up for lots of early cars. If this car runs and drives well and doesn't have any major issues (present or looming), you could see values over $10k...

Check for rust.

Not all of the 911E's have been galvanized like the 911's. I heard the factory was using a lot of left parts since the car was a plug to replace the 914 until the 924 was released.

My brother used to run a shop on Long Island back in the 80's and he remembers seeing a lot of 912E's with rust issues.

I would not pay more for a 912E then a same year 911 in comparable condition.

The CA market is not good on these. You'll have to sell locally. 76 is the first year for smog. 5-8k would be my stab at a value, depending mainly on how bad the paint really is.

He's asking 8500. Mechanically the car is great! I was impressed with how strong the motor was.

The paint was barely good thought the body is galvanized.

I offered $6,500 based soley on the quality of the paint. He was firm on $8500.

He'll never get that much.

We may be surprised and find out he may in fact get that much. The 911 market is white hot for nice cars. A solid, well running 2.7 911 with a fresh motor is now well over $10k, so a 912 that is running well may just bring $8500... I too feel that your offer of $6500 is what the car should bring, but I've been wrong on these things a lot lately since demand is up and good cars are scarce...

The '76 912 does not suffer from the stigma of the 2.7 liter motor 911's of the same vintage. The '76 912 is somewhat of an odd ball since it's the only modern 912, but there is a strong following for these cars none the less.

I missed a '77 911 a year ago for $10.5k that had a fresh motor and trans, but needed a bit of body work, very minor mechanical work and some interior refreshing... I offered $8500 for that car, but had to come up to $10.5k and I still lost it to a another "sight unseen" buyer from out of state. So, values are up...

Good luck!

Jay

True and false.

The out of state buyer was probably pissed when he got the car.

This car a tale bolted to the deck lid which is now removed and the holes are still there and cheaply patched by a rookie.

I knew the car was galvanized because the door jamb was missing a patch of paint the size of a fist.

But your right. Someone will pay him 8500.

Kev,

It sounds like you are not moving forward on this 912 and that is probably a good thing. The right car at the right price will come along.

The car that I mentioned above was not the car for me. The seller was a very nice person who was very upfront on the car. I was sad to lose the car to another buyer, but had no ill will what so ever to the seller (also another Pelicanite) and still will chat every once in awhile with him. This car has since appeared for sale again on this board...so I had a second chance if I wanted it. It's a small world...

Best,

Jay

I remember reading the article about the car and I still have the copy.

Yeah, he had the print up too.

103mph or something like that for 2.0 ltr. motor.

Mechanically the car is excellent. Much stronger car than I anticipated.

It has the VW engine. IMHO it does not have the soul of an early 912 that came with a Porsche engine. Have you looked under the decklid? It's not a pretty sight. 8500 for a 912E with shot paint is a joke. A $6500 offer was an act of kindness!

Save another 5k and buy a decent SC - done.

Just my added two cents.

George

George,

The way the market has gone up on 912 E's in the last year, I'm glad you're not my financial advisor.

My advice is free, so there is not a lot of pressure to hit it right every time.

That said, where are these pricey 912Es? Any examples?

Are you sure you are not mixing up the early 912 with the one year only E? Different story there - those are longhoods and have Porsche engines.

George

Why someone would pay 12k for a 912E when you can get an SC for the same money is beyond me. I'd like to see actual sales prices on these.

I wanted a 912e at one time...I know that built Type IV engines can be quite strong and torquey, and thought it would make a really cool daily driver. However, I found that people wanted top dollar for these cars and the #s just didn't add up.

Now, if you found one with a bad engine for $3-5k, but otherwise nice...I'd say hop on it and troll the 914 boards looking for someone else's already built motor and see if you could get the car down to around 2100 lbs...be into it for a total of $10k and have a really cool little car.

Most 912E's have experienced rough lives. I have not seen too many unmolested examples lately. They are problematic in California due to smog regulations. If any smog or fuel injection items have been tampered with they will not pass inspection.

I would say that one in nice condition with good paint and interior that would pass smog in California would be worth $9,000 - $10,000. The acceleration is nothing great but they will cruise all day at 75 mph and get 30 mpg. I drove from San Francisco to San Diego on one tank of fuel. The most valuable 912E.s are the ones that are box stock and well kept. There is a market for these cars as there is with all stock well kept Porsche's.

And here we have a 75 914 for over 20K

http://atlanta.craigslist.org/car/612585220.html

I'd rather take this wide body 912 for $5,500

The reason for inflated values is scarcity. Only about 2200 made? How many are still around? No one thought long hoods would be worth anything and now look at em.. Heck, every midyear is seeing a slight bounce back in value, so why not a 912e? Heck, there are fewer of them than 914-6's and original 6's are $30-40K cars.

Then again, most of the recent resale BS is driven by speculators and Europeans wanting to relive their youth and being able to afford to do so.

< rant off>
