'83 911SC Am I crazy???

I have a late '83 911SC with 36K miles. It is in PRISTINE completely original condition. Great preservation class concours car. Ruby red metallic with gray-beige interior. All original items including the touch-up paint, complete tool kit, even the little lube packets for the spare tire inflator.

Do you think I could get $32k.

Depends. Are you willing to wait? The buyer who is willing to view the car as an investment will pay top dollar. If it is driven the value will drop like a leaded baloon.

I'd hate to tell you what you could or couldn't get but look at it another way. If you were in the market to buy a P-car for $32K would you consider dropping that much on a pristine '83 SC with 36K miles?

Personally, no way I would. The mileage is not low enough for the money. So it isn't a museum type car. It's an SC at a price point where "overpriced" super clean Carrera's are asking similar money and also you are solidly in the range of decent 930's who have motivated sellers.

A lot depends on how long you want to wait and how lucky you get.

Just for example, a buddy of mine 2 years back bought a pristine '89 Carrera cabriolet with 26K miles and paid $26,500. Back then we thought that was top dollar.

Good luck regardless...

Very lucid, intelligent, and correct dissection of value. In some ways this parallels my home value dillemma. No one in the U.S. would be willing to pay $30K for this car. However, If I were a european buying the car at a 30% discount because of a devalued dollar it might be an easier decision.

I think I will keep it!

Sloan Cars might have some indications as to what this type of car might sell for. That's about the only high end dealer I know of that has this stuff for sale on a regular basis. I bet he knows the market well enough to be able to price his inventory to move.

I'm glad you're keeping it. You'd probably have to search for years to replace such a car, especially in this color combo and with such original equipment and accessories intact. And, if you compete in concours with this SC and are winning, anything else you find might need a ton of work to get to a competitive state.

I might be wrong, but it seems that low mileage, extremely clean 911's continue to ramp up in price. It's VERY hard to find a low mileage car and very nice SC's are rare. SC's are such nice cars to drive that most of these have been well used by now.

It's a moot point now since the OP is keeping the car, but if someone else had a car like the OP, I bet a selling price in the upper $20's would be reasonable if the car is perfect and has good scores/trophies in full car PCA concours competitions including national/Parade level concours. Of course, the seller would have to find just the right concours competitor to sell the car to since anyone that is interested in driving a car like this would be foolish to pay such a premium. But, don't under estimate the concours crowd on what some of these guys are willing to pay for the right car to compete with.

Also, if the miles were kept as is, an SC like this would only continue to rise in value. I bet 10 years from now, a low mileage SC will bring a ton of money...

The car has one PCA concours trophy (the only concours I entered). I don't have time any more to rub and shine to that level. Plus the car gets put in service more as we have four drivers including two teenagers:-(
An '87-89 turbo would be nice but I would have to spend a minimum of $40-45k for something in the condition I want.
Yep, better to keep this one and enjoy it for another ten years.

I would guess with patience you could get that price. The color may be a harder sale, not that its a bad color its just limited in its appeal. Might take a heck of a lot of months, who knows? The problem is there are not enough real data points to look at in the market for a car like that.

Sloan is probably not a great measuring stick for that car since he's been listing a couple of ultra low miles SC's for several years and they dont sell. He most likely does not own those cars and does not have to carry them in inventory and he can simply list them at ultra high prices knowing that if someone loses their mind and wants to pay that price he can make his piece of the action and it costs him nothing to keep them on his site.

Maybe if it had 16K miles instead of 36K miles.

LOL. If you don't drive the car anymore, the current proposed price of $32K isn't too high, it's just a few years to early!
