Why would some one do this?

I would just like anyone to seriously give their opinion on this situation, which happens from time to time on eBay.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1973-Porsche-911-RS-Matching-Numbers-Car_W0QQitemZ320356441314QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUS_Car s_Trucks?hash=item320356441314&_trksid=p4506.c0.m2 45&_trkparms=65%3A-1%7C39%3A1%7C240%3A1318

As this post is written, the ad contains on pictures and no verifiable information about the car, and the starting bid is six figures. My question is, if this is a real deal (and I am not challenging that) why would a seller bother to post before he has pictures and detailed inforamation ready? If it takes a couple of days to get the pictures, why not wait? It's not like eBay is going anywhere. Could it be a sort of "teaser" technique, trying to peak interest?

Any opinions on why some sellers do this would be appreciated, if you have time.

I saw the ad last night and wondered exactly the same thing. Perhaps the car does exist, the seller is a phantom broker, the seller wishes to avoid e-bay fees, etc. The object may be to get a serious buyer to privately contact whereby a separate deal could be made?

My favorite part of the ad is the following: We will have the car completely checked up/out once the deposit is secured."

Buy the car and they will then inform you of what you have just purchased? This is just too absurd.

Bizarre ad, I've never sold a car on eBay but the only reason I can think of for posting it and then putting pictures up later would be if eBay had some kind of a sale going the day the ad was posted. I'd have pictures by now if I were to have done that, though.

Having never sold on eBay I wasn't aware of costs to run photos or possible specials so that makes some sense. Totally missed the part quoted by AndyK...wow, that is a bit much to ask--a $25K deposit before the car is checked out. Makes me think this might be an eBay identy theft unless this is SOP for such high priced items (?) Wouldn't think so but who knows? Very curious.

Do you think there was ever a blue interior on a "real RS?"

This ad has run before. It was the same. No photos.

BTW, the first photo is free. Additional photos are $0.15, so I think if you were selling a real RS you might throw, oh, I don't know... $0.45 at it?

It costs you zero to host your own photos, you can put as many as you want in. I have run up to ten photos for a $50 brochure.

If I was asking $200K for a car I'd include a photo of myself naked if someone wanted it. No one would:-)

The ad reads to me like he has a line on a car for less money and figured he'd give it a shot. The ID theft ones always have an e-mail address in a photo or in the ad and say to use that and not the ebay contact system.

I'm somewhat of a heretic when it comes to the RS, I wouldn't pay more than $100K for a perfect one. I missed my chance, but the market seems to be coming back to me. But that is a whole 'nother thread.

shroud and grills ohhh hows 2400.99,I had earlier been offered this self same tail (and color
oddly) for 350.00 at a freinds shop in Los Angeles.
i just shook my head weird to say the least... Bert

Indeed, same Porschecab with this car and several posts here. Keep the stories, ideas, and comments coming - they are quite intriguing.

So the guy wants six figures for a car but can't post pics? I smell SCAM..Ebay charges a flat fee for autos so there is no real excuse( unless the wife was forcing the issue in which case i would understand the ad..."look honey I posted the ad so don't nag me on the sale of the car"....
