thats a wide open question that needs further information. year, size, etc.
your best bet is to search through the Classifieds. There are always 3.0s or 2.7s posted on the board.

may i suggest purchase of a good running engine (in car) which may be properly evaluated or purchasing from a reliable source (supertec comes to mind)?
I made the mistake of buying a 3.6 which was supposedly rebuilt and ended up paying to rebuild it (+$10k) ouch Doug

Because we are in the process of generating funds for our own "Stimulus package" a new engine from Supertec will cost $ 787,000,000,000.00.
We believe in deficit spending but a deposit of 50% will be required to start the project and there is no definite completion date other than 7-10 years.. Keep in mind by spending money you don't have in order to promote something you won't get you are ascribing to the new American paradigm. All kidding aside a new engine can cost as much money as you can find. My advice to you is to ascertain a budget figure for your entire project and then look at your options.

In all seriousness...ya gets whats ya pays for...I do not think you can do a rebuild for under 10k once you add it all up, Or may I say if you do the Labor Just count on it being that high .
You may come out in the 6K dept. Will depend on "What condition your condition was in" Piston and cyl can be very spendy Then there are the mods you might want to do while there. A good used runner will be at least 5k (yes there are variables there ) But one thing it will be used.

One should add: Best case ya gets whats ya pays for...
Engines are not removed from cars without reason; I would be most comfortable if it were one from a total loss with front damage .... If the reason for looking is a worn-out original still running engine: get that one rebuilt properly, very likely this is the best value for money route.

Seriously, you might consider buying Wayne's engine rebuilding book...
