My wife and I have started to gather some information on 911's as we would like to purchase one in the spring of 2010. We have a budget of 30-40K to purchase one and will be using it as a regular driver in summer. I'm hoping we can get some info here on models and their associated costs for maintenance, reliability and performance. We are currently looking at the 993 model in a coupe version....any advice would be appreciated. Also, I'm not shy about working on cars, what I lack is the knowledge!!! So if anyone has input on where I can find a good mechanic in Toronto, Ontario that would be great also.

soory to be vague, but there are some good books on the subject. I've been around these cars for years and they all are different from series to series. At your upper limit, you should be able to buy almost anything you want. If you go 993, get a later one and make sure the "issues" have been taken care of.

Zeke is correct.............educate yourself with reading up on the different models and what is within your budget and preference. Their is a ton of books/publications, etc., which would greatly help you here. "The Porsche 911 Buying Guide" is one example as well as "Excellence Magazine". If most Porsche nuts are like me, I have a shelf full of Porsche History Books, Technical Journals, Buying and Restoration Guides, sales brochures and years of Panorama (PCA Club Magazine) and Excellence Magazines.
No one can decide for you as everyone has their favorites. Within your price range you have the option of an older restored model or like you stated the popular 993, which to me is a sound choice. In fact you would have lots of money left over with your budget. With that you can buy years of quality maintenance and keep your fingernails clean or put one heck of a garage full of nice tools together!! Hit the bookstore............... Bob 73.5T |

Hey there Adam,
You will get the best advice on this forum so be sure to tap into it. I agree with above in that you should do as much homework as possible. I was looking for a newer car as well but then fell in love with an early car and have never looked back. I live just north of Toronto and may be able to give you some info on valuable contacts. Send me you email info. Good luck, Joe |

If you're going to be using it for a daily driver, you may want to look at 996's or 997's. Your budget will allow for "S" model 993's, just about any 996's, turbo's and quite a few 997's. Drive as many as you can & decide which you want to spend the most time in & how you'll use it (track or daily driver). Good luck. The hunt is part of the fun

What made you think of the 993? Style? HP? I would encourage you to take you time and drive some examples of all the 911s in your range - older ones, newer ones etc.
Depending on where you live and weather in the summer or winter, you may benefit from a 996 with its great AC and heat compared to the aircooled cars. You may find afterall you don't want a coupe, but a targa, or cab, to enjoy open motoring on summer evenings. Some of the most fun of a Porsche is the puruit of the one you get. Heck.. at one time I actually wanted a 924/44 series car so I test drove them all (924, 944, 944S, 944S2, 968) and figured out which one(s) I liked, then drove a Boxster and bought that instead! Just saying.. find some of the books out there.. check out the websites like here, rennlist, sixspeed etc and you will quickly learn where the problems are with any example. Good luck on your search!
