Reliability issues?

Please bear with me as I am a complete novice concerning Porsche I'm not even sure if this is the right forum to ask this question, but I'll give it a shot anyway. I've become quite obsessed with the 911 and have tried to do as much research as I can before buying and I'm reading some information on certain model years to avoid. I found a 90 coupe, actually for sale on this forum, that's in really nice condition but apparently the 90-91 911 had some issues being 1st years of a new generation and I was told by a Porsche dealer to avoid those cars. I also see where the 99-01's apparently had some quality issues which may explain why they are so affordable compared to other model years. Are these naysayers correct or are the quality issues overblown? I am looking to buy soon but don't want to go in blind and make a costly mistake. Any inside information on this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Avoid Porsche dealers. They don't know what they're talking about unless it's the NEW Porsche they're trying to sell you. But that's debatable too.

Do a search over at the "Technical" forum for "reliability issues".

It wasn't a new Porsche dealer, rather one that sells pre-1996 911s. I did read through a bunch of old theads and found some useful information, but I guess I was looking for owners of these particular model years to chime in.

Oh, so you went to a used-car dealer...

Having "Porsche" or "Exotic" in the name of your business doesn't make you an expert.

Get your advice here, from the people that own/drive/repair these cars, not some ex-mortgage broker.

Here's one thread...many more under the search term "reliability": http://forums.pelicanparts.com/showthread.php?t=477029&highlight=reliability

No, I didn't go to the dealer. I phoned him, and as far as being a "typical" used car salesman, he wasn't. I found his name on this site and he seems to be well respected. And, if you noted, I did try here and didn't get much help. I was just looking for owners of 90-91 and 99-01 models to get their input, but to date haven't received any. I tried a search but didn't really find any year specific feedback on reliability. I'll keep looking.

Have you asked on Rennlist?

They have a very active 964 forum.

Not all dealers are crap and not all dealers dont know about older Porsches. Walk into my showroom and I'll be happy to match knowledge with anyone on all air cooled 911's. My weak points are the 996 line up since I dont really care for the cars and I surely know about the 997's.

I would suggest the OP decide on a budget and exactly what he wants to use the car for and go from there. I would also add that the 90 and 91 cars at this point in their life cycle would have had the factory issues addressed.
