Value of a restored '74 Targa

I have recently acquired through a trade a full frame off restored 1974 Targa with a '79 3.0 engine. It has 111,000 miles on the chassis, not sure of the miles on the engine, although it was "gone through". The restorer acquired the car from the original owner in Arizona, they were neighbors. It is a 1 footer if I am using the term correctly. The paint is excellent, I even took off the headlight covers to look for "the full restoration". Everything looked very good, very minimal rust stain. There are a couple of rust "stains" starting in a couple of places, inside the trunk and engine cover, the usual suspects. All new rubber and gaskets including the targa seals. The engine runs well, takes a few minutes to warm up, but I suspect that is normal for that engine, needs a chain tensioner update, but has the pop-off update.

Overall a beautiful yellow car with the Targa top in very good shape

My question is, what is the car worth?

Can you post some photos, escpecially the areas with rust stains?

Rust stains would worry me meaning the paint prep has issues and there is more hidden rust, escpecially in the front pan. I thought cars in AZ were rust free?

Maybe 10k with unknown history on the non-original motor without the chain tensioner update(head studs ok?)

Have to agree with John. 10K is a good ballpark figure.

The 74 got a bad rap with the 2.7 engine issues. The '79 3.0 engine takes care of that, but you can buy a '79 with that mileage for about that same money......Just one opinion. Good luck.....

I'll take some photos to post of the car and the areas mentioned....the wife used the camera last and guess what.....dead batteries.

From what I've seen under the car etc., I don't think the rust stains are the tip of an iceberg.

You do make a good point about the engine unknowns....I'll call the restorer to see about any details.

Details I've left out, very nice interior, no cracks on dash, polished Fuchs....I'm sure there is something I've left out.

Thanks

Sounds more like $12K for a southwestern car unless there is a serious rust issue. The '74 is great because it does not require emissions testing in many places...including NM and CA. A
"1-footer," glass out paint job would likely cost at least half of that. A perfect dash and 4 good fuchs are worth at least $2k alone.

Is it this color? It is supposedly light yellow (117-9-1) although the shadows darken the color a bit in the photo. I like the color/look with the stainless targa bar, opening vent windows and all the chrome.

Wow, that looks exactly like my car, the only difference is my fuchs are polished out with no black.

I thought so. I recently bought it to take the place of my other '74 which was hit in the front and totalled in April. It is a really nice color. It sorta grows on you. Those are 6 in wheels with the orignial anodizing. I have some 7 inch polished fuchs (still with the black background) that I will probably put on it (will likely sell those wheels). It has a 2.7 and tranny that were reported just rebuilt and it runs well, but since the numbers are already not matching...I have a hopped up 3.0 and tranny from my other car to put in there. I will likely sell the 2.7 and tranny in there now (unless I come across a nice roller to put them in). Although I bought this one froma felllow that claimed it was perfect both mechanically and paint/body...Almost everything did not work, was wrong, or was installed incorrectly...so I am fixing it or swapping parts from my other car as I have time. On the bright side, it came with some very nice H1 headlights and a perfect dash...which are very had to find.
