Is it the right time for "me" to buy a 911??
Well im 24 years old , and ive always loved the classic look of the older aircooled 911's, for the last 2 years ive done alot of research, bought countless books, and i think im ready to buy one, im a vw mechanic, ive never really worked on anything pre-1990's. ive owned some 500+ whp cars and im not into speed anymore, just looking for a 911's classy look, maybe just a turbo look. Which 911 would be best for me? At around 14k... how bad is insurance on these cars?

Buy a 964. Thats a good car for that price. Are you using for a daily driver? Not into speed so you look at 911s? Dont worry about insurance, I'm 23 and have owned several since I was 18and it hasnt been bad at all.

as the man says buy he best you can find for the money, and for that money you would be looking at an SC in very nice shape. being a veedub mechanic, you should be able to work on these easily and that could open it up to an early 3.2 carrera needed a little attention but still a solid car. plenty out there for the picking. a factory TL of any vintage will cost more than 14 if it is fairly decent.

Where are you located? I ask because a $14k 911 is probably not going to be very good if you have winters. (I mean real winters, not West coast winters.
![]() SCs and 3.2 Carreras are your best bet for reliability, but they do require maintenance. But as already noted, if you're a Vdub wrench, you should be able to figure these out. 964s are dropping into your price range but most are of questionable condition and they are more complicated (possibly requiring more maint.?) However they have ABS and better A/C systems, thus easier to "live with".

Check with your insurance company for a quote... that could be a deal breaker tight there
![]() I'd look for an SC/3.2 Carerra. They are pretty rugged.. just valve adjustments and oil really. Does the $14K include 10-15% extra to fix what needs fixing or making some upgrades?

Get a copy of ''The Used 911 Story'' by Peter Zimmermann. It will tell you a lot about 911s up to the 993. More than I can tell you in a month. Invest 20.00 in your curiosity, and you will be able to figure out where you stand on owning a 911.
BTW, they are fun, and I really like them. |

Good choice. I really liked mine, but I moved to early cars, if you are looking for something really cool look there. Just do alot of research watch out for clutch/flywheel issues but you'll figure it all out. Good luck

Drive a 964, carerra, and an SC. They are all different. All good. Just different. You will have a preference.
The older cars are lighter and noisier. The 964's have torque a plenty, but are heavier. Carerras are somewhere in between. I think the fun is in shopping. Larry |

Well guys i found myself a project... a 67 912 with no engine/trans, body has suprisingly very little rust, has a 930 widebody already installed.. not the best looking thing.. but clean title, and a very honest seller. I will post pics when i have it in the garage. My choice was mainly in the fact that i want to build it my own way and learn as i go along. I had a chance to drive a 993 and ride along a 71 carrera and like LWJ just said, they make alot of noise and just feel pure... and i still have cash to build it on my own..

swb is short wheelbase. I think in either 68 or 69 it was switched to lwb, long wheelbase.
