Looking for a good car cover

I am not sure if this is the right area to post this question, but I thought I'd start here.

Does anyone have an recommendations on car covers? I will be parking my daily driver 87 Carrera outside under a carport. I live in Northern California (Silicon Valley), so the temps are moderate most of the year. The carport should protect the car from any rain. I am thinking I should probably get a cover with a lock, but not sure if that is a hassle for a car that will be used regularly, if not daily.

Any recommendations and advice will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Richard

if it is for a daily driver, i bet you would end up not using a cover since you have it under a carport. i have several car covers but no longer use them on cars that sit outside, only the inside. there is a new type of cover that looks interesting www.touchlesscarcover.com . it deosn't actually touch the car ( no scrathcing) and you can set it up to drive in and out (convenient) . i was thinking if i modified my deck to be a carport and parked a car there that would be used fairly regulry, i may try it.

best quality and looking car cover is available from MSroadrace on Ebay
here's the link, they are for 996 but fit all 911 Porsches well.
best fabric, like a parachute but better. slickest cover I've ever seen with the Porsche colors and logos. this cover can be used outdoors as its storm proof...at least it feels like it, very tight threading. I've had many types, this is by far the coolest toughest one.

I found some decent ones from empire. This cover was a replacement cover for a custom cover that cost three times as much and started leaking water and collecting dust under the cover in less than a year. My Empire cover is 4 months old, has survived numerous strong thunderstorms and seering Texas sun, and so far is exceeding my expectations. I have 3 cars under cover, soon the other two will be covered by Empire.

I've used Tyvek car covers outside

They are white to repel heat and do not hold moisture.

Just don't make the mistake I made by buying from this seller. He stated a lifetime warranty, but when it ripped only 6 months into it, he obviously ignored all my attempts to contact him. Too late for feedback.

Firstly I had better declare myself as the oldest established custom car cover maker in the UK(established January 1979). We do not however sell to the US or Canada as the insurance premium required to cover product liability for those two countries alone would actually double our annual business insurance costs, rendering such orders loss-making, so I have no axe to grind.. We have insurance to sell to the rest of the World, and we have shipped covers to every continent over the years( including North America because we can sell to Mexico).
Considerations for outdoor covers are as follows.
Is the fabric purpose made for car-covering purposes? Very few are, hence they do not breathe sufficiently(breathable garment fabrics are mostly useless for car covering as they depend on body heat for breathability)-a reputable cover-maker should be able to quote breathabilty figures, and incidentally also waterproof figures as well-if they can't, on what basis are they making their claims? A tailor-made cover using the right fabric shouldn't scratch the car-naturally provided that both the car and the non-scratch inner surface of the cover are grit-free when the cover is put on the car(this means the owner being careful to keep the cover clean and checking the paintwork prior to using the cover). UV degradation of many cheap fabrics is suprisingly rapid. A garage type cover( eg one that doesn't touch) the car should also be breathable to prevent condensation build-up(other than in arid environments of course)..
We won a UK car magazine's comparison test for outdoor covers wherein the fabric was subjected to proper lab tests for all the above performance considerations, whereas most magazine "tests" have just quoted from catalogues.

Hi Cellison,
We do not produce the fabric; ironically we import the fabric from the US. The US still has a clear technology advantage over the Chinese producers of this type of fabric.
Another irony; I went to a conference in San Diego a decade or so ago to learn more about breathable fabrics, only to find that the 2 lecturers were ladies from a college with great expertise in fabrics ( now a University) only 50 miles from my house!
