First 930 buyer needs advice!
I've been scouring this fantastic forum for information for the past weeks and am starting to get a pretty good feel for what I want for my first porsche.
It will be exported to Norway and must be 30 years old due to import duties (a 1980 will do as it won't be here til after new years anyways). Just for a bit of background, I have wrenched a bit on motocross and bicycles but basically nothing on cars and am NOT looking for a project, rather a reliable weekend driver. So it's down either an 'as original as possible' '79 (US) 930 Turbo or an '80 (RoW) 930 Turbo. Price range $20-30K. I have my sights on a few cars and will take the plunge befoe long. My two questions are: Can anyone offer any pros and cons over a '79 US and '80 Row 930's? Ride height, AC and Sunroof are the only differences I can see and possibly something with the exhaust? I don't care much about the sunroof and I live in the fricking arctic so AC is not necessary! The next one is Stock vs Modified/upgraded. To get the vehicle inspected as a 'vintage car' it needs to be more or less in its original form. at least visably (they are not going to start looking at camshafts and piston rods). but ride height, dimensions, wheels/tires and body are all critical. If I buy a stock 930 (like this one: I would appreciate any advice on these topics. Anyone with a car fitting these descriptions can feel free to send me a mail or pm. Jeff

Check into the import regulations just to be sure of the rules. I never had a car that qualified for Collector plates untill a couple of years ago and when I really looked I found that if it was a limited production number it would still qualify even though it was less than 25 yrs. old. Got cheap(er) insurance ( B.C., Canada ) because of it just thought I'd mention this cause all 930's have really low production numbers, 700-900 cars per year world wide. Finn |

Thanks for the advice.
I'm not totally 100% dialed on the Norwegian laws but I'm pretty sure the 30 year rule is key. never heard anything else. the big question is how much upgrades I can get away with. the last thing I've heard is that everything needs to be either Porsche original parts or TUV certified. They are not going to start opening up the engine and look at cams and rods or anything (I think the inspection takes about an hour) but everything visable like bodywork, brakes, suspension, exhaust, etc. I don't know either if they would recognise an aftermarket Intercooler, Turbo or not either. apparantly it's all down the inspector and what sort of mood he is in that day... I plan to go and talk to them before I decide on what exact car to buy, but I am leaning towards a more or less original model and possibly doing some work over here. there is a RUF afiliated shop in Oslo. jeff

They let you do certain things that are not stock items here, brake and lighting upgrades, safty related stuff mostly, and they are pretty picky about original. I'd say get a copy of the regulations for importing cars and go from there, if you just moved there won't they allow you to bring your Canadian car with you? Most people I've talked to here get the car registered and then do the modifications they have planned.
Best bet is to find out the rules and the loopholes and then get the car that fits, good luck. Why did you move to Norway? My Sister in law lives there somewhere, if we ever go for a visit I'll look you up and check on your ride. |

Around 1000AD the vikings roamed the northern hemisphere, raped and pilleaged and brought all the prettiest women back to scandinavia. Now the VAGIKINGS have taken up the torch. Scandinavian women, travelling the globe, conquering men with their natural beauty and charm and bringing them back to their homelands. As much as I long for a cold Canadian and Hockey Night in Canada, it looks like I'm never getting out of here! Married with children and fully integrated now...
I have researched the laws and talked to a lot of people. seems pretty similar to CAN, as long as the cars is technically sound and original then it should be just a question of making sure some of the safety aspects like lights and belts are up to scruff. I will most likely send a car to PPI in San Diego on monday. jeff
