73 E Valuation

Looking to purchase a 73 E.
Original owner
All paperwork from new
Tools, jack, spare included
Rebuilt engine & trans with new clutch about 9000 miles ago in 1985.
Factory sports seats, factory air & original radio
Original interior in very clean condition
Near original color repaint about same time as rebuilds

Two Questions:
Odometer busted about 15 years ago so mileage is anybodies guess.
All service work is dated.
How big a deal is the mileage?

If I buy it the first thing I would do is get the odometer fixed, but to what mileage? ZERO?

THANKS!

mileage doesn't matter imo. the motor is the cheapest thing to deal with on these cars OTHER THAN good functioning MFI.

color? this has an effect on price IMO. repaint is, for me, a detractor as you don't know what it may hide.

Looks close to Gemini, but not a perfect match, if photo color correction is okay.

I had one just like that a few years ago (less sport seats). Assuming good mechanicals and chassis, that should easily be worth low $30s, IMO.

Yes, you are correct, good eye!
The owner said it was a 'very close match'.
This is what is so frustrating about shopping for these early cars.
I don't think a perfect one exists and so it's a question of which negative variables you can live with.
At least there were no accidents!

No worries. My '73 E coupe was off to the 'silvery' side. The one you're showing is off a little to the 'blue/green' side.

I think a numbers matching 73E sunroof coupe with sport seats in good restored condition is probably worth more than low $30's even in today's market, as long as no rust repair is needed and the car hasn't been updated or bastardized in some way.

pre-boom a nice (not perfect, but nice) E wasn't quite a 30k car.

at least not without sport seats. could be those damned seats make a big difference.

Hi,

I think Clayton's car is priced very well IMHO, but be sure to see it with your own eyes to make sure you are pleased with the appearence. There is a good local shop, Zuffenhausen, that could do the PPI. I don't think he is the original owner but has owned it a very long time. Hope it works out for you.
