Market value for heavily modified 1985 widebody 911
Hi -
I'm looking at a heavily modded wide body 85 911 coupe and I'm interested in opinions as to the price I should pay. This car started life as a 1985 turbo-look coupe. About 10,000 miles ago it had a lot of work done by a very reputable builder (all receipts available). It had a completely rebuilt turbo engine uprated to 400hp dropped into it. It also had a rebuilt G50 tranny installed. The car is mechanically perfect as far as I can tell. The body is an 8. No rust or dings but the car is not particularly clean and so it is hard to tell. Interior is OK - seats are replaced and in good shape, but dash is cracked. and generally a little shabby. No turbo boost guage. What's it worth? Half of me thinks that this could be great deal on what is "almost" a 930. The other half of me thinks that this is maybe be a bad deal on a highly unoriginal 85 coupe. What would you pay? |

Maybe someday originality will matter on an '85 Carrera but that day isn't really today. I would say that the car is probably worth somewhere between what the stock Carrera would be worth and what the 930 would be worth. I'm not totally up to date on where that market is these days but I would guess mid $20's.

Thanks for the help. I see regular Carreras of that era in very good shape going for 15-16k around here. I guess the question is how much extra the widebody+work commands.

Is it an m491 optioned 'turbo-look' car with a turbo motor? Or regular narrow body with fenders? With the m491 you get all the turbo chassis bits (trailing arms, brakes) which would be nice. The m491 adds some value, but it sounds like a low 20's car. I've seen quite a few legit 911 turbos in the mid 20s lately.

It's an m491. It is seriously fast. The owner just took it up to 150 on the clock with me in it, which isn't something I would do on a public road myself. But it got there shockingly quickly.

Any more votes/ideas? I like the car and would like to make this guy an offer. Is low-20s the right number?

What year is the motor? 3.0l or 3.3l? Is the G50 a G50-01 or a G50-50?

The motor is an 87 3.3. The tranny is an 89 50-50. Does this help?

The M491 was approx $10K option on a base 911, just for reference purposes.
If it is a genuine 491 (you can tell by the rear trailing arms and brake caliper placement) that would be worth more, to me, than a regular 911 that went to a body shop to be turned into a widebody. You mention its a G50, which means the rear torsion tubes have been modified to fit the new transmission. Sounds like nice of upgrades for what I would consider a Track car. A genuine 930 with those upgrades would likely be a $30-35K car. An M491, in nice shape, with no mods, is likely a $20-25K car (there is a bit of a cult following for the M491 fans) What use is the car for? Weekend toy? Track car? daily driver? Before you go in with a "low 20's" offer, what are they asking?

It would be one thing if it were a body kit and say an 1980 930 engine and tranny in a Carrera. But that's not what it is. It's a factory turbo look carrera that really truly has been upgraded. I stand by my first number. $25k.

I'd say just a few thousand less than a 930 in the same shape..
