Question 1981 Wolfsburg Edition 911 SC (Fact or Fiction?)

Was there a 1981 Wolfsburg Edition 911 SC ever produced? I know of the 1980 Weissach Edition; however, I have never heard of a 1981 Wolfsburg Edition. If it indeed existed, please feel free to discuss its particulars. I would love to put this to rest.

Fiction.

No such thing as a "Wolfburg" Edition 911SC.

And, that wouldn't make any sense. Wolfsburg is the city where VW's headquarters is, and one of VW's main factories. That has nothing to do with Porsche. If Porsche were to have an edition named after a relevant city/area, it would be a Weissach (which of course was done in 1980), Zuffenhausen or Stuttgart. Certainly not Wolfsburg.

I thought so, McLovin. I don't think that I will be able to convince the seller of this fact, especially if he originally purchased the car under such pretenses. I will try to be as diplomatic as possible. The car is simply an SC. Certainly no signs of it being a Weissach Edition either.

Whenever a member of the general non-P-car-enthusiast public thinks of a special edition German car, it's always a "Wolfsburg Edition" because of the VWs. You'll never convince 'em otherwise, usless even to try

Wow, thanks for this thread/post!
I saw a classified on autotrader.com for a 1981 "rare" Wolfsburg edition 911 for sale.....low mileage too. The seller said it was "special" because it has cruise control as well as some other goodies. Might still be a great car, but now I know that there is no such thing as a Wolfsburg edition.

Thanks!!

Volkswagon had a "Wolfsburg Edition" for Passat, Jetta, GTI and Golf, but Porsche never had such a model. Their might be confusion with the "Weissach Edition" that came out only in 1980. What makes the Weissach so collectible is how unique it was in the early Porsche 911 line up. It came in only two colors, with matched wheels and interior. One color was called, "Pongee Beige Metalic", sort of a champagne color and the other was "Metallic Charcoal Grey". Another unique feature was the red carpet and piping Porsche called, "rust". Porsche was producing the 930 Turbo in 1979; however, Porsche did not make the Turbo in 1980. It was an economic decision based on gas prices at the time. Rather they decided to use the standard 930 body, non-turbo 3.0 liter engine and produced only 406 cars aptly named the "Weissach Edition".

Now you know the rest of the story................

Most of that is accurate, but a lot of it isn't.

Porsche did make the 930 Turbo in 1980, it just didn't send them to the US. That decision to not send to the US was not based on gas prices (the US has about the lowest gas prices in the world at that time, and 930 buyers were not gas price conscious anyways).

Also, the Weissach did NOT use a "standard 930 body." It just used a regular SC body. It is just an "appearance" package, it has no mechanical performance upgrades over a regular SC.

I'm also not sure I'd call the Weissach "so collectible," I think they command a little more than an equal condition '80 SC, but not a whole lot. Similar to the other "paint and sticker" special edition Carreras like the Commemorative Edition, 25th Anniversary, etc.

Well McLovin,
My curiosity regarding the Wolfsburg Edition led me to do a search which led me to the Weissach. It was an interesting article I caught about the Weissach, but according to what you said, most was not true with the article. It was written by an Ed Dugin, a Weissach owner. The 930 body he stated was used I questioned as well, because I came across what I thought was a Weissach years ago and do not recall the big butt. The article did say the Weissach had a sticker of $32,000 and all orders were already filled before they even came to the USA. His caught on fire recently and was destroyed as the catalytic converter ignited a hose. I guess that means its down to 405!

I am not excited about the Weissach based on production numbers or performance, afterall it was simply the guts of an 1980 SC. Its the color and trim that make it very appealing to me.

Thanks

Bob

I agree, the color and trim on the Weissach is very cool. No doubt, they are very nice, interesting cars, kind of a "top of the line" SC. Interesting also because there weren't many "special edition" SCs sent to the US (I can't think of another one, other than the Weissach, off hand). If I ever went back to an SC, I'd love to have one!

The rare and special "wolfsburg" edition ( LOL ) has been on the market for about 6 months on several websites.

Didn't the weissach have 7 and 8 inch fuchs with the matching metallic paint? That's about the only performance upgrade. Every Weissach owner thinks they have something special. I have never met anyone that was keen on buying one or paying extra for it.

Weissach editions came with 7 and 8 x 15 Fuchs colored matched although it was the silver beige color regardless of the car color.
"Clown-Face" interior in both. It is a standard 1980 SC. There is absolutely nothing special just like the 74-75 Carreras here. All were marketing ploys with not on iota of performance enhancements.

I owned one new.
