Value of a '74 with 3.0

Hey guys - thought I would drop this by you and see what you thought. I bought a couple of 911 projects at the worst possible time in my life - the third child and business that has done me in - so I thought I would run this by you. I will try to post pics so you have a better idea but I am home here with three kids today.

The car is a '74 coupe (no sunroof) that was originally silver but painted resale red. The body of the car is not too bad, the rockers are good, the rear torsion tunnel is fine, the rear deck beneath the window is fine, however there is rust on the front driver side floorpan (it needs to be done, pretty much gone), and the front suspension pan is no good (usual place, needs to be completely done). The car had an '83 3.0 transplanted inside with the '83 tranny - I have no idea what the mileage is, what the leakdown is, etc. It did run a year ago.

Needless to say, I don't have the time to fix it, nor do I want to. The car is not flared, and is pretty stock. I suspect the person that I sell it to will pull the drivetrain and put it in a better roller than this one (though I don't see many '74 rollers). I don't know if fixing the floor or the front pan is worth it to someone. There are better rollers out there for sure.

Anyway, just trying to get an idea as I will be posting it. It has a clear title. I just don't have the energy to blast the floor (I planned on keeping all that was good and 'puzzle-piece' the drivers. The doors close great.

Cars like this are best priced on the basis of parts value. A good '83 drivetrain is probably $4500 or so, give or take based on condition. The various parts you'd salvage from the car may add up to $2500 or so. Because anyone parting it out would be waiting and investing labor (and paying to have the final remains hauled away) you might want to leave a little money on the table, so to speak.

Thanks for this great advice and thanks for your PM. I would love to move everything over to another roller or something but time will not permit this. I was thinking of listing at $5900 which is a little less than I have into it (like $6900 or so) but I think $6500 is at the limit as it has the rust damage, which I am completely open about. It may or may not sell at $6000-$6500 right away but I need to hold out for the most (a month or so) because the car is owned by me and another person (clear title in my name though).

I think the only other thing it has going for it is the fact that it's a '74 and it may be repairable to someone who wants a shorthood coupe with no sunroof with no smog requirements in Caifornia, so patching the floor may be worth it. I ice picked the entire floor, and I think if you blasted the passenger side it would hold up. I bought it at a time when I was getting into the hobby and have learned a lot - and what I don't have any of right now is time. I really appreciate the advice though as I thought this thread had fallen on deaf ears. I will post photos today.

It might be worth less as a 'saver' than a parts car, but that car could be saved.

motor is a 78 or 79. It has those years' egr tube on the left side of the motor , sticking up thru the sheetmetal by the distributor. Also it has an external voltage regulator (80-83 had internal in the alternator) and lastly plastic fuel lines (80-83 had metal)

if you can get that motor started up and running, you may realize more than you are asking. Otherwise its a gamble whether the motor and trans is any good; hence smaller buyer pool willing to take risk

I checked the motor serial and trans serial and it says they are from an '83, but it probably has a bunch of years put on the top for all I know. Thanks for the tip though and it's good to know this stuff. I will try to get it to run, it did run, but I barely have time to sleep as it is. Thanks for the post.

Still interested in looking at the 74. If you decided to keep the drive train I would like to make an offer for the body. Pictures can say only so much.

I would like to be first in line for the purchase......

Worth saving, IMHO. Unless that rust extends to other areas, those are not tough fixes.

Like that it's a non-sunroof, the ducktail, and the gray finish cookies. DG
