1972 RS Clone Value

OOPs, just posted a valuation question on the 911 board and then saw this board. Rookie mistake.

Just looked at an immaculate 1972 911T made into an RS clone. Looks like no expense spared. Great paint work even under the car, inside the doors, fenders, under both ends. Any surface that has been painted is completely free of dirt or any debris and looks perfect. They found a factory RS ducktail and a factory gas tank. Everything seems sorted. Motor has about 6500 miles, runs strong and has that great aircooled sound.

Now for the hard part. Listed at $90k, but says make me an offer. Don't want to insult the guy, but don't want to over pay. Nice car, but at the end of the day it is a restored 911T with RS bits. Any help is appreciated.

Merry Christmas

Post pics or provide a link. $90k is over the top money for an RS clone made from a 72T IMO

Rtrorkt 12-23-2010 12:56 PM

Didn't take pics this morning, but can. Having thought about it, the owner has priced this puppy as an RS Clone without the official RS VIN. He seems to have gotten everything right, except at the end of the day it is just a 911T that has been massaged. Must say, it is gorgeous, nothing wrong, all the right moves, but....$90k.

There is another project car, 69 body, 3.0. That is $25k and I am sure they will take less.

To me the value is not in trying to replicate something that cannot be, rather in the joy of a lightweight early 911. I don't think I will pay for someone else's obsession.

Spending $90,000 to build a well done clone is believable. Unfortunately, for the seller it is very difficult to get this type of money out of the car. This is due to the need to find that exact buyer who the car strikes a chord with and more importantly values the cost of the finer and costly details, such as the original ducktail.

I bought a $22,500 3.2RS clone and now have over $100,000 in it. Purchase price is sometimes the cheapest cost!

Most fun car I have ever owned!

Great looking car. In looking at them both, maybe what I really want is an outlaw R Gruppe cars

What motor do you have? What do you think its value is?

Motor is a 3.2L

Value: Tough question probably 50% to 75% of what I have put in it.

I am a firm believer of 200+hp and lightweight. In the long hood category that is either a hotrod or an RS.

I do have to say the experiences in this car have been priceless!

Thank you. I certainly agree with your thoughts on the experience plus or because of the car, being the Porsche idea.

At the end of the day, its the value to me and not the seller. The RS stuff is nice, but I am not a purist, so I suppose I offer him high $40's that he rejects. Then on to the next idea

$90K? suckit. Build your own for 1/2.. most RS clones are $18-30K depending on quality of build and desirability of builders choices (ie, 2.7MFI? Stock 3.2? stock brakes? 930 brakes? 7/9 fuchs? 17" lindseys etc etc. )

Rtrorkt 12-23-2010 07:56 PM

Had basically the same thought. Car has 2.7 with MFI, stock RS aluminum calipers, the "real" ducktail, the "real" gas tank. Kinda, sorta says the builder was obsessed, but that does not translate to real $$. Got say though, I have never been under a 911 of that vintage that is as clean and tidy as this one. I know that is just elbow grease, but impressive none the less.

I agree a DIYer could build a hotrod for half the $90,000 number. Look up Speedo's SWB 2.7 R. I have also seen cars which are built with an eye to authenticity that cost well over $150,000. The car you are looking at seems very nice. Post a picture if you can.

Clone $$

$90K to buy a 911T based RS clone? "I'm left speechless"

Couldn't agree with carjmark more. $90k buys an '08 TT with low miles + warranty, it buys the CMG hot rod TT that is on Ebay, and gets really close speedster pricing. Going to look at a '69 body with a 3.0 for $25k. That seems still a bit steep, but we will see when I can get it up in the air to take a look. Will try to get some pics of the pricey car too.

Merry Christmas to all.

All cars for more than you would pay for an 08 TT. One is the equivalent of two 08 TTs. All are part of multi-car collections. I have learned not to judge the sanity behind individual builds.

Rtrorkt 12-24-2010 03:03 PM

Macroni, shows that it is better to build your own than buy someone else's obsession. The cars attached to your message are great. I particularly like the yellow Gunnar build. What is in the TRE car, do you know?

The cars that Luke (Macroni) has posted are fantastic cars. I suspect that each of them cost at least $90k to create, if not more. That doesn't mean the owners can recover that money if they decide they want to sell, but if you have a vision of a car in mind, and want to enjoy it before you get too old to drive, be prepared to spend a lot of money and time.

Rtrorkt 12-24-2010 08:16 PM

I can't tell you guys how much your comments/input has meant. I have recognized from the start, that value is in the eye of the beholder/restorer and probably not the author of the car. Having said that, I am hopeful that the car I see on Monday, a '69 with a 3.0l motor at $25k, hopefully $20k will form the basis of one of the cars that you all have posted. Because from my view, and at the end of the day (cliches), it is what make you smile.

Thank you guys and Merry Christmas
