How to pay for a project car

I am considering buying a 69T for a project. What you you pay? It's been sitting for at least 10 years. Thinking an original restoration or a narrow body hot rod. Unfortunately, I don't have any pics. I have a good understanding of the cost of restoration. I just don't want to pay too more than it is worth considering it's condition. Here are the details.

Matching numbers 69T.

Body/exterior:

Original paint is cracked and needs complete respray
Front pan is rusted through
Rockers need replaces
Needs floor pan
Doors and fenders are rusty but salvageable with some work
Wheels are 14" Fuchs

Mechanical:

Original 2.0 does not turn by hand
Webers look to be in good condition
original transmission likely needs rebuilt.

Interior:

seats need recovered
mostly complete, missing fold out pockets
Needs new carpet
dash needs restored

Thanks for any input.
Kirk

$3000 Tops.

That is a big project in which there is no way you will not be upside down quickly.
Unless of course replacement parts and labor are free.

How to pay for a project car

Thanks for the reply. I was thinking the same. The guy was asking $6500 and he was pretty firm. I got him to go to $5500 but I thought that was still too high. I don't think you could even part it out and get your money back at that price. The only thing it has going for it is that it is complete and original. Even though, it seems that the hot rod cars are bringing as much money as the original Ts. I am in the middle of a project now and this would sit until next winter before I could start on it anyway. I would be doing all of the work myself so that helps with the resto costs. I actually am doing these more for the enjoyment of creating something than the profit etc. Still, I think I might wait for a better car to start with.

It's a "T"....

and not the most sought after "T" model at that (low power, non-CW cast crank), and it needs a full restoration - $3k sounds about right.

If it's an unusual color (olive green, slate grey, pastel blue, etc.), and restorable, add $1k.

I was thinking that too. Colors bring premium!

3k is about right, if the car was really original I might go 1k more.........not worth parting it out because the amount of work and costs involved doing it........parting out a car is a time consuming costly affair; ask me how I know.

Thanks for the replies. The color is Aubergine. It's also a sportmatic transmission. I forgot to mention that earlier.

A sportomatic....

lowers the price as well, a very small market for those and parts are very hard to source.

While not my cup of tea, aubergine is a bit odd and some people would probably pay a bit more for it.

IMO, there are too many nice long hoods out there priced under $20,000. A car like this is going to need more than $17,000 in resto work; as described in my book this car has major ru$t.

Fish, that's going in my 73. I do have that 70 911 transmission that could work nicely. I even have the pedal cluster. Maybe pick up a refurbished 2.7 and be off and running (after a few months of body work that is). That's what keeps me going back to this thing.

If your wanting a project, I'm not that far from you. I have a 71 coupe that is solid, but apart. The guy I bought it from was going to have it dipped, but changed his mind about half way through. And I have plenty of spare parts as I also have a 71 targa roller I picked up last year and Ive had a few longhoods in the past.

Since I put the 3.2 into my 73 I just lost interest in this project.
