Value of a 1986 Factory Turbo look cab

I have a 1986 Black FTL CAB with 173K miles and excellent compression/leakdown numbers. Car is in VG condition. It is a driver so has many many of the standard issues with chips etc. I dont see many of these cars posted for sale and those that i do see are priced pretty high. Can anyone give me an idea of a value for this car. Some info:

1986, 3.2L engine supposedly had the top end done at 60k.
relatively new (about 8 years old) manualtop in excellent condition. No tears or rips.
Drives very well, with a little smoke on occasion. uses about 1 quart of oil every 1000 miles. great looking car. Needs some tires and rt front caliper rebuilt. New brakes and rotors, just had valves adjusted and a tune up within the last 5k miles. any thoughts appreciated.

They are great cars.

You do see some very high prices sometimes, but you really need to be very low miles, all original, mint condition to get the huge premiums on the M491.

If your car were not an M491, but just a regular "driver quality" '86 cab with 170K miles on it, it would probably be worth $15K, and you might struggle to get that. 1 quart every 1000 miles is still within spec, but the engine is showing some wear.

With the M491 option, I think the car is probably work around $20K.

I successfully bid a 86' turbo look spoiler delete car off E bay in 2007 for 14k. It was white over black with 125k miles. Said to be 1 of 6, I think for that year. Did a PPI that revealed major issues so I passed on it. Dealer in California bought it as underbidder and listed it for 21k and sold it. Not sure if dealer fixed the major issues it had, didn't mention it in his ad.

The problem I found with the turbo look sellers was that they ask almost the same money that will buy you an actual turbo. There used to be a turbo look forum/board on yahoo but I don't think they are active anymore.

I saw somewhere a general rule of thumb is a 10% to 20% premium on M491's. I do think the black/black color combo is desirable in your case. With your leak downs and oil consumption, I think that's a point you'll have to make to convert the buyer - the miles are on the high side and that is the one thing that gives pause.

I think the buyer you're looking for is a dedicated M491 fan already, but doesn't want to spend much. That's a tight market, but as a buddy of mine who used to sell cars said all the time, "there's an a$$ for every seat."

Point is, priced at full value, which I'd say on the high side is in the $20-$21k range it will take a while to move. So, use a same year narrow body, same color cab, similar miles as a reference point and add the premium as a starting place. You can always work down, but not up.

Question is, how patient are you?

Much thanks for your inputs. I have no real reason to sell the car other than just change to something else. It isnt actually a black on black...the interior is an gray-green color...thought to swap it all out, but it actually looks nice. If you hear of anyone considering such a car, please pass them my way. If i really decide to part with it, will post it in the for sale section...thanks again...tito

it is real...1 of apparantly 8 m491 cabs which came into the US in 86...have never taken the time to get a certificate, but called and verified that it was an option on the vehicle...

the general rule of thumb for values on these car has been that they have been actually more desireable than the Turbos in the past, but there has now been a sharp upswing in the 930 turbo powered cars and pricing.
That said I believe that a year for year, car for car comparison, shows that an M491 is worth approximately $ 10k more than a like for like car of the same year as a standard Carrera.
When you see numbers like 1 of 8 or 1 of 30 in my case, then you really have to ad value to that too.

imho, one of the reasons trend towards the m491 version is they tend to be lower mile garage queens. This one has 175K miles. Location counts a lot too (looks live VA?) I wouldn't pay more than 20K for such a high mileage car, and that includes a "premium" for the 491 package. A non 491 in same condition is a $11-14K car to me.

How's the clutch? trans? does it have an LSD? How old are the shocks? Fuel lines and other rubber components?

I love "high mile" special editions - they sometimes allow "mere mortals" to obtain & enjoy them!

The car is in N Virginia. Front A arm bushing, ball joints, front sway bar bushings rear torsion bar bushings, tie rod ends, banana arm bushings all replaced within 5k. (planning on turbo tie rods and rear sway bar bushings coming winter). I think the shocks are fine. car rides well and is nice and stiff.

As i said needs a set of tires and front caliper rebuild..which will happen sometime soon as well, as soon as i take it apart and determine which type of pistons I have (wiper ring or the other one). I would drive the car anywhere except in really hot weather only due the AC. Its there but dont wish to load it up with r12. just take off the top, or open the windows and unzip the rear plastic...provides great air flow.
