1987-89 3.2/G50 Targa Pricing?

Been in the market for an '87-89 911 Targa for some time.

Not sure where prices have gone in the last while. I have looked in the past and it seems that a nice example, with 100-150K miles, good maintenance history were selling in the $15k region. Coupes were in the $17 K area.

Is this still the case?

Any recent info?

Thanks

I looked at a very good 'no stories' 130K car in NorCal for $21K. If it sold, it has taken months. The problem with this and many others was a lack of maint. history. One or two owners when the car was 'just an old, cheap car' didn't know the significance of maint. history. I saw a couple of 'perfect' cars in the low-mid 30s.
If you're seriously looking now, someone posted (I think it was here) a link to a program that shows multiple sources (primarily CL) of cars for sale in whatever area you name.
Happy hunting.

PS
Don't forget; cars will talk to you. You just have to listen, and stay away form recently repainted.

Try this...

... for mass search on CL/kijiji/ebay. Keep in mind, though, that the prices listed are asking prices and the real sale price may differ.

site mash : : combined classified and auction listings

Cheers,

d.

In my experience, Carrera 3.2 prices have 'bounced off the bottom.' Too many people were talking about what bargains they were in the low- mid-teens. Now they are very high teens/low 20s... we'll see if they sell at those prices.

I sometimes find and broker these cars. I've recently been approached by people willing to spend in the high 20s for excellent examples.

I really think it depends on how you define a nice example. Pelicans seem to be the home of 15K cream puffs--until you get the details.
Really nice, no story cars are going to cost you low 20s unless you luck into one of those deals that come along now and again--divorce, etc forces sale.
Of course I'm biased as I have a very nice no stories 89 targa

I firmly agree with you guys. The shorthoods are the next longhoods. They are following the exact same pattern. It wasn't that long ago that you could buy a nice 73S for $20K.

I love the longhoods, but the shorthoods, esp. the 84-89 Carreras, are in many ways better cars.

They are faster and easier to maintain, but they still have a lot of the "original 911 goodness" left in them. They really are still "Classic 911." (IMO, that ended in 1990 with the loss of the torsion bar chassis, and the intro of power steering, airbags, etc. etc.)

In reality, mechanically they aren't very different than the longhoods - the chassis and suspension are the same, fuchs wheels, and body parts that are largely interchangeable. Of course, the engine is pretty much the same, too.

I agree the pricing increases have already begun, too, at least for "top condition" cars. There are still bargains out there on great cars, but they are getting harder to find.

...and it's not a huge deal to make your underpriced Carrera look like an overpriced longhood.

that's another parallel - 25 years ago people were saying "it's not hard to make your cheap longhood '72S look like an expensive shorthood '85 Carrera!"

And I think 20 years from now, someone will be converting that red car back to its shorthood configuration.

p.s.

that'll look good with those 7/9 Euromeisters.

I doubt short hood look will "come back." but just in case, I left the inner structure...

Thanks. Been looking for the Euromeisters for months!

For a few decades, no one thought the longhood look would come back, either.

I think the stock impact bumper look will come back, for sure. It simply is the Porsche 911 look of the late 70s and entire 80s. It's iconic in its own way. 10-15 years from now, I can see the impact bumper cars being viewed as more iconic than the small bumpered cars.

And, ultimately, as with all 911s, 35 years out it is originality that people will be after and be paying the biggest dollars for.

(And, from a style standpoint, the impact bumpers are not bad at all. I can't think of any company that integrated the impact bumpers onto a late 60s/early 70s car as successfully as Porsche did with the 911.)

Most of the efforts were completely hideous! (e.g., compare the small bumper BMWs of 1973 with the impact bumper BMWs of '74, yikes).

I paid 17,000 for a 88 Targa with 140,000 miles and it's a little scruffy. Expect to pay over 20

I just paid $18K for my 87 Targa (6/11/2011) with 124K miles, but recent valve job and great exterior/interior. I've been looking for years and finally got one!

Under $14 for Welpe ('87, purchase Sept 2010) - 80,000 - engine top correctly rebuilt less than 4,000 miles ago - no accidents - excellent ppi. Bone stock targa - really clean, except for the blue paint from the paint can lid the PO hit on his farewell drive (sort of explains the price, and the blue latex paint pretty much is all off except the wheel wells - just a little elbow grease).

You can find bargains, just be patient.

I like the short hoods- but I think it has to do with the fact that I became 'aware' of 911s when they were 'current'.
