Is this car worth $24k?
1989 Silver 3.2 Cab. 58k miles. All stock. Drives nice (of course I would get PPI). Paint is nice except for some stone chips and a couple other random chips. Top has one micro tear. Only maintenance records are from last two years. Will need 60k service in a few months. Will probably need new clutch in near future since there is no sign it has ever been replaced. Doesn't appear to leak oil. Doesn't smoke. The car is near New York City.

ppi will tell alot.
Not seeing pics I would say a little high. Check car fax to make sure those are the true miles. How many owners Prior?

I don't mind paying "a little high" . . ..
just don't want to get ripped off. Also, even though I am buying the car to enjoy, I aim to buy assets that at least hold their value. I want to know that if I need the cash I can sell the car and take a minimal hit.
Assuming the PPI shows nothing major, what should this car sell for? Thanks for your interest. |

The 1989 is a good year I think.
Wayne and others have inputed that these models might increase in value more than some of the 964 models. I was looking at Bruce Anderson's market update of these years and this is his most recent price range. for the 1989 Cab. Low is 19012. Good is 21616. Excellent is 28938. I would think if the PPI comes back with only minor probs. you could get it in the 22k range. If the car has been garaged a bonus in your area if they salt roads. In cal we seem to have the best pick, so if not too many pop up in your area it might be hard to get the seller to lower the price. Post the results of the PPI I am sure others will comment soon.

You guys seem to pay a premium for quality cars in the east. In So Cal, that would be a bit high, especially if the top is torn. A "micro" tear becomes a major tear quickly.

Now in 993 land ...

You know, the records not being there is an issue if the seller wants top dollar. The mileage may not be verifyable, if there is no seamless maintenance records either. I would shy away from this car at that asking price. 20-22k will make it reasonable, including the missing records. It is unbelievable that one would not have records for such a car, don't you think? What does that tell us about the previous owner(s).

With only two years of records you will have to really look close at a good PPI as well as drive the car at various speeds utilizing the clutch. If everything is solid I would make a lower offer and try and meet in the middle. Use the lack of records as a MAJOR bargaining chip as you cannot certify that the car has been properly taken care of until recently and may be on the edge of a major motor & tranny overhaul. If all checks out including solid paint and interior then I still say negotiate lower based on the lack of record issue. Good Luck!

Sorry. I've looked at a couple cars over the past few weeks. I finally settled on a black one with tan interior. I'm very pleased.

Cars with service history/records bring the best money. So, in return, if you view your P-car as an 'investment' then pay the premium and buy one with records.
