66 912 part/sell/or build
I picked up this 912 just because it was a nice car and I am an impulsive person. To make a long story short, I have a 73T in my garage that I am in the process of building and I could really use the funds to get the paint finished. Here's the 912 in question.
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-cars-sale/640210-66-912-a.html It has a fresh engine (I did a reseal just to get a good look at it). Paint is a 6 out of 10. Body is solid with one exception being the floor pan. I was thinking I would just sell it. I had a lot of interest but no real offers. Here's what I was thinking. 1. part it, which I hate to do to such a nice car. 2. try to sell it outright, but I haven't had a lot of success so far. 3. build a sleeper I have all of the parts I was planning to install in the 73T just sitting in my garage. 3.0 and a 915 or a 911 tranny. torsion bars brakes etc. Any opinions out there?

I see you've got it up for sale. Good call. Definitely don't part it.
Cars that need work take time to sell (unless you price it really, really low). But be patient and try to find the right buyer. This one deserves to live another day.

I don't think there's any problem with the price. I suspect it's a time of year thing. If you can sit on it for a few months until the snow starts to melt and people are looking for something to drive for the Summer, you'l find a home for it. Regardless, it appears too nice to part out.

Thanks for the replies. Unfortunately, timing isn't working out well for me. I could use the funds to get my 73 painted. I would really prefer to build the 73 over the winter so I can drive in the spring. I hate to still be building in the summer.

Definitely don't build the sleeper out of the 912 unless you plan to keep it ... forever ... and sell the 73T. Sleeper 912s have no more value in most cases than a stock 912, and often less value than a very nice stock 912. I've known too many guys who built a very nice hot rod but started with a 912 chassis because it was so much cheaper to buy than a comparable 911. Guess what? At the end of the road they're left with a car that's a lot cheaper than a comparable 911, except by that time they had $20k+ in the car. Ouch.
I think $8k is a little bit ambitious for a 912 that needs paint and rust repair. The market is soft for any 912 except for exceptionally nice examples. You can buy a 912 driver for $6k or so. I'm not saying your car isn't worth $8k, just giving you my opinion based on what I see in the market. Best of luck - Matt

Clean the car up, take better photos and list it on eBay with the reserve set at your bottom line price.
