Estimated value 1981 SC Targa

Hi everyone!

Not a Porsche person, so thought I'd ask the experts :-)

1981 Porsche 911 SC Targa

266,000 miles
500 miles on top half rebuild and all new oil lines.
Interior totally redone by previous owner (500 miles ago?)

Mocha Brown paint in good condition (scratch on 1 fender)
Convertible top in good shape.
Roll over hoop original black paint was removed and hoop is polished silver.

Otherwise, totally stock as far as I know.

According to the owner it runs and drives well, and has no leaks.

Has been garaged for last 5+ years or so under car cover (except for the 500 miles)

So... rough estimate of private party (here, eBay, etc) sale value? ($10k, $12k, 15k?)

Thanks.

It would be much easier to give an estimate if you had pics ? Tim

The key is the mileage. I've found Porsche people are reluctant to consider 911s with over 200K miles. If I had to guess, I'd say $7500-8500.

Not sure where you're located but at 8,500 in norcal you could probably sell that car within the hour of posting it for sale.

If $8.5K (if this were not a fictitious price) in SoCal that thing would be gone in 15 minutes on Craigs. I have been looking at the market, and not too long ago (5 months) a 79 SC went for $10,100 on eBay with similar mileage.

SCs and Carreras with high mileage are not easy to sell.

If the vehicle has been properly maintained , the rebuild is documented and ppi is good, it should certainly sell for a reasonable price. I bought an 86 with 175 k , rebuilt at 150 k...many other things done..I couldn't be happier. Tim

I bought a 227K mile Carrera 2 years ago that couldn't bring $7.5K on eBay. Paid $9K + .5K to have it delivered with a/c working.

I personally am not afraid of high mileage cars. Many many "Porschephiles" are.

Without pics, or documentation or location it is hard to determine a good price. Any rust or corrosion? How's the pan? Who did the top-end?

With that kind of mileage, my guess is the buyer will be someone who wants a driver that he can pile on miles and miles and not care about it. My WAG on price range is similar to techweenies, but will go a little higher. $7500 - $10500. Most likely it'll settle in at $8500- $9000.

If you live where it snows, you have a short timeframe as the selling season is coming to an end.

Thanks for all the input so far - exactly what I was hoping for.

I don't have any photos at this time - it needs to be washed, waxed, etc for it's photoshoot :-)

Vehicle is in Sacramento, CA and I believe previous owner also was here.

I'm assuming no rust at this time - I haven't crawled under it.

There is no paper trail - I asked and current owner did not get rebuild docs. Don't know what other docs are available (original papers, COA, other maint receipts, etc)

If it were to go on the sale block a PPI would be done.

Even though it doesn't snow here (more than 0.1" once a decade) I think the season for convertibles is about over - might rain here on Monday.

So, based on location, assuming no rust or corrosion, the redone interior and oil cooling lines, is the consensus opinion that $9k would be likely, that $11k would only happen if HypnoToad forced a buyer into it, and the SC's I'm seeing going for $14-$16k are way out of this car's league?

Thanks.
