Value of an 86' Targa with 229k miles
I'm new to these forums and looking to purchase my first 911. This will be a 2nd car but will also serve as a daily driver (live/work in San Francisco). That said, I don't want a museum piece.
I'm looking at several and would prefer an 84-89 911 Carrera. The one in question is listed for $14,900 and is a single owner 86' Targa. I have yet to see it but am told that the car is free of leaks and/or maintenance issues. The valves were redone at 150,000 miles and there is documentation (though I haven't seen it yet). So, what would you experts say a reasonable price is for this car? Thanks in advance - ![]() |

too much. I bought an 88 with 175k miles, completely rebuilt engine 2k miles ago (almost $13k in receipts just for that). Over $35k in total maintenance receipts, everything is there from day 1. I bought it for 13k AND it has a G50 transmission. I paid for it what the owner had into the engine rebuild, so I basically got a rebuilt engine with a free car wrapped around it
![]() Keep in mind that it is not just the engine that wears. Suspension, steering, gearbox etc etc all wear out eventually, even on a 911. I'd say if you can get it for 10 or 11, go for it. Last edited by flatsicks; 12-29-2012 at 08:00 PM.. |

Thanks Flatsticks.
How did you manage to find such a good deal? Where are you located? It seems that the market here in Northern California for these cars is higher than other parts of the country. I was offered a 1988 911 Commemorative Edition with 160k miles on it for $19k. The car was in decent condition but I didn't get a chance to see any records and it had some sun fading on the roof. I'm torn between holding out for the kind of deal you got, buying one like this 86' for $10k, or buying one in better shape but paying about $20k for it. |

$10k-$11k is max, the mileage is a killer, anytime they go over 200k miles its $10k or less. I sold my immaculate 155k mile 84 3.2 g50 for $12k and it was a tough sell.

Cars that are "properly maintained" with higher mileage, certainly are not limited to a specific price. Some folks change bushings, shocks/struts, rebuild engines and transmissions. Keep their paint in check as well as interior. Like I said, if car checks out mechanically, its a fair price...Tim
