To sell or not to sell...that is the question
Little background......I've got three cars, 2 old vw's (recently acquired in the past 2 years) and an 85 targa which i've owned for about 6 years. I've recently caught the vw bug, and lost some interest in the Porsche. I still love driving the car, but I just do not have the time to maintain and store 3 cars. I plan on going back to school for 4-6 years next Fall and definitely do not want to have to pay for 3 cars.
The porsche is up for sale, but im still having a hard time letting it go. I always hear those stories of older guys saying they wish they would have never sold that Camaro, porsche, etc, and I don't want to be one of those guys. My mom has an extra spot in garage where I can store the car, but it will be across the country. Ideally I'd store it for the duration of time i'll be in grad school, and then hopefully reclaiming the car once I start working again. If the car sits for 5-6 years will the seals rot, etc??? Will it cost too much to get it running again? So....should I sell it or store it? Part of me doesn't want to let it go, the other part of me says I should just get rid of it so I don't have to worry about it. Looking for some advice from folks with more life experience than me. :-) Thanks in advance. |

If the Targa is in great shape I would keep it.
I noticed asking prices for the air-cooled 911's keep on going up and who knows how much they will be if you want to get another one 5-6 years from now. What kind of environment will the Porsche be kept in? Here is a thread about winter storage http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-911-technical-forum/183215-winter-storage-checklist.html http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-911-technical-forum/386927-very-long-term-storage.html

Sell it.
Trust me, storing a car CORRECTLY for a period of time is a huge hassle. I was a VW-Porsche-VW-Porsche guy who has gotten the bug several times. My last car was a '55 Oval Window Sedan. It was a really sweet car. Frankly, I got out of it because I had no where to store it properly, and if I did, I did not see myself driving it for years. Long story short - a guy who has been looking at it everyday while driving to work bought it from me and loves it everyday. He gives it more care than I could and he is enjoying it instead of having it sit there. Now that I have a 911, this is the only car I have time for. Three cars is a lot. I would sell it. I mean if it was a '73 RS or something maybe I would NEVER sell it. But it's crazy to store something for 5 years when someone else could be enjoying it and you won't have the hassle of storing it,paying insurance, etc. Trust me. |

ya im gonna sell it. it's a cool car, but quite frankly impractical and expensive to keep around for 5 more years. the cost of porsche engine rebuilds vs vw engine rebuilds is astronomical. vw's aren't as fast, so maybe someday when i have enough money to burn i will buy a track car :P (i don't track my porsche anyway and that's where it should be!)

Why not sell all three and get a 356, then you get both.

Some guys sell.
Time goes by. The thought of coming back enters one's mind, but the window has closed for most.

If you can afford to keep the Carrera .... keep it.
If you cant afford to keep it .. then sell it. I have 2 Carrera's -- one I've owned for 14 years and I've decided its never getting sold even though it averages useage of 1000 miles per year. The other is in storage in another part of the world and gets used as a daily 2-3 weeks per year. I find just owning them is great .. driving even better ....... life without owning at least one Porsche would be a hard pill to swallow. |

Owned an '74 Bug Convertible. Had an overseas job, didn't take it, let a friend use it. Then went to a second overseas job, couldn't see storing it, so had my Dad sell it. I regret it to this day.
If you can afford to store it, do so. If you need the cash for school, sell it. Debt free is better then a P-car in a garage. |
