What air cooled 911 does 20k buy comfortably?
Hi all
I've read many of the great threads on this site and am presently debating a SC/3.2/964 coupe as a daily driver. I'm in CT but willing to travel within about 300mi. Wondering where today's market is and if you all think I can afford to be picky and get myself a 'no stories' car for 20k or less. My instinct is that a 3.2 is the way to go... but I look forward to your comments. |

I bought an 84 Cab widebody, guards red, new top, g50 trans, with fresh rebuild(runs awesome) for $18K. It's a great car, I don't drive it everyday, but the price range, and body style was hard to pass up; not to mention its RED!!
You might consider something newer to drive daily, and you'll spend money on no matter what you buy on knickknack stuff(door handles, keys, window motors, visors, lights, etc).. but the 80's cars drive great, look timeless, and surprisingly on mine, all the electronics worked and still do! In a nutshell, it really depends on the car, where it's from, and obviously who owned it! Does it have to be air-cooled?

Study the market by using this forum and the Cars For Sale. This place is the best resource for these cars. Finding what you want/like should be easy on this BBS - just getting there with the money in hand is the hard part and beating other people to it. It's not unusual for more than 150 people to be looking at the Porsche classifieds at once. I say make an adventure out of it and don't restrict yourself to 300 miles. There are many sweet cars outside of Connecticut - most are out west.

I'm always down for an adventure purchase and have boarded planes to buy vehicles on more than 3 occasions but its easier with modern machinery or motorcycles where the stakes and spread of vehicle condition are more contained.
It does have to be air cooled and it does need to be driven daily. 3.2's are really coming into focus as what I want but I need to get out there a drive a bunch of cars to be sure. |

I'd have to agree with the CountD here.... location is as important as anything, weather is a big factor for condition a lot of times. If youre planning on spending 20K for a new car, what's a $300 plane ticket to snatch the right ride?
There are some neat cars out west for sure, and the elements are much friendlier in Southern Cal., AZ, etc. I should have joined this forum years ago before I bought the Cab... I just got lucky as hell I guess. It was from Los Angeles however.

Carrera or SC.
They are plentiful in that range, so you can be somewhat picky about all kinds of attributes like color, equipment, etc.

For a daily driver, newer is better. And don't forget the 4wd on your 964. And power steering. And working A/C.
