Looking for a 2nd 'nostalgic' car to do track days. 944S2? 911SC? Others?
Just bought a bike and now am looking for a 2nd car. Have a Subaru WRX which is a daily driver and am going to be getting a car to do track days in with a friend of mine who has a Cayman and also to alternatively commute with. Looking for something from the late 70s to 80s as a kind of a "nostalgic" car to do this in as well. Want a trackable street car with AC, interior, etc.
Been considering 911SC, 944S2, Alfa Romeo GTV6/Milano Verde, E30, and some others like Nissan Silvia import (legal in may). Looking for around the performance of a 944S2 or FC Rx7 Turbo which is a car i've owned in the past. Want a naturally aspirated car. 911SC - see a lot of these around for ~$14k is this about right or do you get a bad car for this price? This is on the upper end of what I want to pay. It gets HOT here in Las Vegas any issues with air cooled engines in the heat and hard driving? The primary thing that attracts me to this is 911s were always a dream car for me since childhood though now I like many other cars equally and aftermarket. Should I shy away from a Targa for track use? 944S2 - Everybody seems to rave about these as track and autocross cars on level with E30 M3 but not the outrageous price that people demand for those these days. BMW E30 - For the E30 I would be looking at a 325i. They are kind of below the performance of what I want and was also looking at M30 swapped cars that I can mod into a Alpina 3.5-like, I don't mean being a replica car as I hate those. Which is why I prefer the 944S2 or 911SC but I think buying a car I feel I have to do more to would add to the fun for me in a different kind of way. M3 prices are getting too outrageous for me. They are selling for ~$18k around here, it is insane. 325is on the other hand are pennies cheap around here. As far as the Alfas I heard good things about these two cars and I don't expect people here to know much about them as this is more of a German car forum. Their aftermarket is rather small. Similar to the E30 I would buy a 3.0 swapped GTV6 which is actually very common and would probably mod the Verde with S cams and a 4:10 ratio. I heard the trans isn't great on these but have no confirmation and never driven one. Every source I have on them are pro-alfa and saying "ohh its not that bad". Reminds me of my Rx7 days..... "ohh they are not unreliable". Despite being Italian have bulletproof motors so long as you do timing belt and replace tensioners when you are supposed to.... like any car really. Or so i've heard........ but dad's GTV6 lasted 180k miles before he sold it in the early 90s so I actually have seen it on this front. However Alfa dealerships existed then so parts were easy to get. Now? idk. Always liked Alfas. The final Europeon car i'm considering is a Triumph TR8, easy to mod and maintain, surprisingly decent aftermarket, uses a lot of GM parts for the engine, AC, etc. Also a lot of engine parts from Land Rovers that work as cheap mods. Coupes are rare, would probably need to buy a vert and chassis stiffening and roll bar to track it. Also brakes are poor, would need to upgrade that. A lot of enthusiast owned shops make parts for these cars, nothing seems to be unobtainable. As far as anything else i've been looking at some Japanese cars. Nissans are the only ones i'm interested in aside from a couple Toyotas. Was thinking of importing a Silvia or waiting another year and grabbing a R32 GTR. Only thing is for a track car I do not really want something that is turbo and the only Japanese cars that interest me are turbo or ridiculously overpriced due to Initial D or Fast and the Furious and kids overspending (ie. AE86s and RX7s). Also considered a Turbo MR2 simply because the mid engine configuration interests me. I trust Turbo Japanese cars reliability more than I would in say a 951 which is why I consider them. However, despite owning a WRX I like naturally aspirated power more than turbo. I'm just looking to see if anyone has any input on any of these? Any suggestions? Looking to pay less than $15k and money saved is money earned or better spent on wheels/tired, suspension, and other mods. Only considering cars that have mostly bulletproof motors, another reason why i'm not considering turbos really (and no RX7s, lol). All of those above I have seen or know or heard are like this. Sorry for the long post but i've done a bit of research and just want some input and opinions and don't want to make some basic 14 year old's dream generic "what car" post that I see all the time on the Subaru, Z, and RX7 forums. Any others I should look at that I do not mention? |
