2002 Boxster S

Hi:

I would value your input on the value of a 2002 Boxster S.

- Silver/black
- 40K miles, 6 speed manual
- no accidents, damage or paintwork
- has cheap and curbed aftermarket wheels (Moda) that would need to be replaced
- Tires are about 4/32
- Brakes likely need to be done soon (rotors look worn)
- Has detailed service records and was maintained regularly
- New roof with glass window

How much would a nice set of used 18in Boxster S wheels be?

How much would you think this car to be worth?

Thanks!

The Boxter S is such a great car. I have owned mine for a couple of years now and can't believe how nimble and how relatively cheap it has been to maintain. I'm sure other Boxter owners would agree. Unfortunately, my perception is that they are continuing to lose value for whatever reason.

That being said, I would guess that your car is about $16k car. The fact that it is an "S" with low miles make it desirable. The wheels IMHO make it less desirable.

Check eBay, Wheel Enhancements, and the various Porsche boards (rennlist esp) for good used Porsche wheels for the Boxster. There always seem to be lots out there. You can buy a scuffed up set and have them refinished, too. A set of new colored center caps, and you're good to go (also on eBay)

Actually, I am looking at a potential purchase here. I was thinking $12K since it needs tires/brakes and I want different wheels. However, the seller is firm at $16K.

I am actually worried a bit about the low mileage, since it is more often low mileage Boxsters that develop IMS or RMS issues. If it had say about $60K miles I would feel that this problem is less likely to occur. What are your thoughts on this issue?

Thanks,
Kay

Agree with your assessment, but if he has records and looks like he took care of the car might want to meet him in the middle at $14k. I would point out that there are plenty of silver/black Boxsters out there, so nothing special there.
If you do end up needing the IMS or whatever, my take is the car will be worth more with low miles than with high when all is said and done.

M96 engine ......put aside $18,000 for a new motor....IMS failure is only one of several reasons why these engines fail.

Thanks everybody for their input. I decided not to go with it at all. I will stick with the 911s.

I passed on a 2002 Boxster S for $7,000 with 100,000 miles (but I feel stupid now) I think the IMS failure rate is pretty low actually.

That sounds like a very good deal. Actually, given that the car had 100,000 miles without engine failure is likely a good sign.

True. Worse case scenario, I could have flipped it. But in the end I didn't have the time space to actually follow thru, lost a $200 deposit as well. But then again if it did need a new engine then maybe it was the right call.
