88 3.2 G50 Targa, 120K miles
Hi all,
I've been searching for my next Porsche for over a year now, having previously owned a 90 964 and a 78 SC. I was initially looking at 996s, but like so many others the M96 engine worries have scared me. I've just had a 3.2 G50 car show up on my radar, and I'm unsure about pricing on these cars since I haven't been looking at older cars during this search. As stated, it's got a bit under 120K miles, original engine and trans, clean car but certainly a driver. 2nd owner, lots of Indy maintenance, but as I say, no major work done. Straight, clean, and rust, free, but not concours. It's got a new Targa top. Obviously I'd do a PPI, but if that checks out, what's a fair price? |

As prices have been going up recently, I would venture a guess of $24-28k

Just curious. Are targas worth more or less than cab's in the same condition?

More to me, but to others ???. I think they are the perfect 'compromise' car.

really depends on the car but from what I usually see: coupe>cab>targa.
Personally for me I value cab's the least but the market doesn't see it that way.

As the supply of really good cabs and targas continues to go down, their values continue to rise.
Also, as cars get older, the values of the open top cars also tend to rise. Less and less people want them as daily drivers (for which coupes are the most practical). Instead, they become weekend/good weather fun cars, which gives an advantage to open cars. |

As a comparison, last summer I almost bought a '89 3.2 Targa G50 for $25k --guards reds, tan. It had 80k and a recent top end rebuild due to burned valve guides. New tires, 930S wheel.
It was absolutely pristine -- almost perfect. Not full records, but it had the rebuild and everything for ~5 years from current owner. Yours sounds a bit down market from that one. Under $20k would be a good deal. |

Looks the potential seller changed his mind and now plans to keep the car. Too bad.

Sorry to hear that but Keep looking and be patient. Don't settle. You will find your 911. Btw was that a blue targa?

Nope, it was red. But I love the blue color on the 3.2s.
Maybe it's a sign I should get a 964 coupe again - probably the car I want most. |
