1989 cab

Got a line on a nice cab black/black/black with some small imperfections and am being ask to make an offer. I have seen nice 89s for sale for 26,500 but not sure what is a good price.
I don't really need another car but if the price is good what would be fair.

The owner had an appraisal for 36,000 which is out of this world, IMO

I'm thinking 19,500.

You're thinking a little low. Small imperfections mean maybe a couple thousand when all added up. $36k is too much. $24k or thereabouts is more in line with what normal cars of that year are going for with imperfections. Add a couple grand for cabrio. If the imperfections are small (really small), then add another couple of grand.

This assumes PPI would come back with no mechanical issues.

Car has around 100,000 miles, has had a recent service so I would assume clean PPi.

There is about a 6" rip in the roof, and tear in the drivers seat, interior needs some tlc.

Electrics are falling out of the seats, and car has been driven very little in the last 3 yrs.

Does a cab add value or deduct?

Just put a new top on my cab and it was ~$1200 -- and that was with a sonnenland fabric Sierra top. Higher end tops run $400+ more than that.

Given the needs, $19,500 sounds reasonable -- but the seller likely won't think so if he is sitting on a $36k appraisal.

Cab adds value.

Those imperfections are not small. That's at least $5000 worth of work done by someone else. And not run in three years? Add another $2000 for necessary maintenance.

$21k, max - and I do mean max.

Looks like I now own a black cab, based on a good report on the motor.

Congratulations Larry, sounds like a nice catch, you'll have to drive down the QEW and show it off. Let me know if you decide to sell the 356?

Regards,
Mike

Thanks Mike, here's the problem with selling the 356. I love driving it!

It is just a driver quality car I brought from San Diego a few years back, it's kinda slow, kinda light in the curves, no radio, no AC, no heat but its fun fun fun.

It will definatley going to be a sad day if it goes. However I can fight that battle another day.

Do you guys in the Niagara meet somewhere? I get to the Falls alot

Late to the party here, but I'd like to see data showing that he Cab adds value. Absolutely not my experience. Coupes are generally the highest, then cabs, then targas.

I know of an 1987 Cabrio with 88,000 miles that just sold in GA for $21,000 the car had original window sticker and full documentation, new clutch and top end rebuilt.
It had a small tear on seam of drivers seat and the usual wear area on both sides of canvas top where it folds (so a new top was required). Car was in Black original paint with Light Grey Interior.
N.B. Same seller could not achieve $18k for that car this time last year.
