Thoughts / info on a 1967 912 Golf Blue Coupe for sale

1967 Porsche 912 | Antique Auto Sales, Classic Cars, Exotic Automobiles | The Classic Car Gallery | Southport, CT

Does anyone have any information on this 1967 912 Golf Blue Coupe (VIN 459847) for sale by Classic Car Gallery (CCG) in CT (also listed on eBay)? I’m very interested, so I would prefer if you didn't bid (but obviously I can't stop you). I talked to Steve at CCG, and he was candid and answered my question as best he could. Not an owner, so he really didn't have the deep knowledge that a Pelican might have … but it is going to need new pans (not a big deal in my mind), front seats, and maybe a few other little things here and there.

However, I have two concerns, (1) the amount of overspray means it was a cheap paint job (done by some prior owner), which always makes me wonder what else was done on the cheap … and was the paint done to cover something up? (2) vin912.com says the car was in Hilton Head, SC last July, but CCG is holding a CA title and said he got it from CA? Seems odd that the car would go from SC to CA to CT in less than 12 months. Plus a life in Hilton Head, SC is much different from a life in CA.

Any thoughts or information would be helpful. Thanks.

Well, obviously there's no rocker trim, so in painting the car, some PO either 1. welded the holes shut or 2. squeegeed Bondo into them.

The overspray is a good hint as to which method was used.

But the bottom line is: do you want the car to drive and enjoy, or eventually restore? If the latter, this may not be the one for you.

Pretty car, whatever your decision.

If that car is worth $15k I'm undervaluing mine.

That paint job scares me. How hard is it to remove the door striker plate? I think a close inspection of that vehicle will reveal bonds, along with rust and/or crash repairs.

Send it to a reputable Porsche shop, like Spencer Cox at Speedsport in Danbury for a ppi. If the dealer balks at letting an expert examine it, run away...

The car has a horrible paint job, overspray on door latch, engine lid release lever and what not.

I agree that the car looks.......ehhh good in Gulf blue at a distance but but but.

I would compare it to looking at Charlize Theron from 30 feet away but once you get closer it is actually Melanie Griffith....no offence Mr Banderas.

Stay away!

A friend sold one like this a few years ago. I'll check to see if this was his.

My friend's car went to Amsterdam, and got a full resto. It's hard to believe that 912's are valuable enough for that treatment.

I'm telling you guys. A couple years from now a SWB 912 will be worth just as much as a '69-71 911t.

Not sure I completely agree with you, but I don't think you are far off.

To the OP, just buy the car before somebody else does! If I had room, I would pay 15k for it. By the time you get "done" working on her, she will be worth it.

You're probably right on this. This car might not be a $15k as it sits, but as a driver that someone might restore, I think it might be a good platform, if the body is in good shape.
