Contemplating selling the 78 930
I have other projects I want to focus on and have been thinking about selling my 78 930 RoW sunroof delete. What would be a reasonable value on this car in today's market?
Quick run down- Mostly stock, still running CIS. Larry at CIS flowtech helped me out with this. SC cams, I have the original cams. K27 HF turbo, ghl headers and HE's, Borla Exhaust (I have the RoW complete exhaust except wg), alum pressure plate (have iron one in box), added carrera front cooler and 930s front mount cooler, new front zimmerman rotor and new pads, new front fuel pump less than a year ago, B&B intercooler, new braided brake lines, added H4's, but have original lights, upgraded headlight electrical to relay system, upgraded ignition system to Hi6-N Crane system but have original CD system no wires were cut. In everything I have done, no new holes were drilled, or sheetmetal cut. It's a driver, needs paint. A little surface rust at front windshield that is not bad, but needs to be addressed at some point. Black leather interior, sport seats of course. Mostly original. A great car. I drove it to Escape to the Ozarks from Austin and not a hitch of trouble. Mostly sorted out from sitting for several years under a cover. Had factory air. I have most of the stuff (brackets, etc) to return to a/c. Here is a pic. I have rockers off, but have them in storage. No accident car. I was thinking a $32k-$35k car only because it is a low serial number early car that is a factory sunroof delete. ![]()

I'm interested at that price. These early 930 will rise in price. I'm unloading my 73' to buy one of these 930.

It's going to be a tough decision. It's so fun, but I don't have the time to enjoy it much due to life.
What are paint jobs running now? I think a paint job would do wonders for this car. It needs a driver's side seat, but I haven't wanted to touch it because it is so comfortable. It sat in this thing for a 9 hr drive and it was super comfortable.

Recovering a seat is cheaper - $500-$1000. DIY, much cheaper. |

Be careful with a re-paint.
Many buyers get suspicious of re-painted cars. Some road rash is expected on 35 yo cars.

I guess that is a good point "matt f". There are parts of this car that are original (paint) and much of the car. I would term it a survivor with time and use which why I like it so much. You know what you have. I used to use the phrase "There are women who look good and women who are good looking." I would say this is the latter. Flaws and all it's an honest car. I want to make sure this is what I want to do cause it doesn't seem like they come up very often from searching which is why I posted.
Who makes really good seat covers? I would rather spend the money for what would be compared to equal to the original seat or just leave it for someone else to determine their threshold of quality. I would hate to get the car in a condition that you don't want to drive it for fear of damage or chips. That just doesn't seem right. I have always believed a car should be cared for but driven..

I would not think of painting it. If you want to, repair the seat and leave it at that.

A euro car won't command the same price as a US car. Rust is a MAJOR issue, even if it is small. I've bought cars with just a bit of rust in the past. If you want to fix the car right chances are very high you are going to find A LOT more of it as soon as you start taking it apart.
Turbo's are hot cars at the moment, but I think you'd be doing well to get 30K for a euro car with rust. Obviously just one mans opinion.

Are you saying that RoW cars command a lower price than a US domestic market car "Rich76_911s"?

John,
Yeah from what I've seen grey market euro imports typically sell for less than their US based brethren. I can't say there is a ton of "logic" to it, but I think US buyers prefer US cars. I've been looking at Turbo's (was just in Texas looking at one) and I'll confess that ROW cars are pretty low on my list of targets. A screaming deal might peak my interest otherwise I'm looking for a US car. So, in short the ROW cars have fewer buyers and sell for less because of that. Again it's just my opinion and what I've seen. I'm certainly not the God of 930 pricing ![]() You may do better selling it back to Europe. Good luck with it either way. Rich

Unless you know a ROW car has been federalized properly, it is advised by most buyer's guides to leave those cars alone. This makes the market smaller for ROW cars, and smaller market = lower price. This works out well for ROW car fans on the purchase end of things. If I had to change some things about my 3.2, I would change them in this order: ROW 3.2 motor - more powerful. No sunroof - lighter, more headroom. Manual windows - lighter, simpler. A ROW car might have been the ticket for this. But I'm not interested in a half-assed federalization job on a car like that, and trying to inspect in for all of the stuff that would have been required would have been very difficult. |

I can see your point on the federalization. I spent a good amount of time correcting the wiring the headlights/fog light wiring. It's all been rewired to work like a RoW should with high beams and fogs both on, but run through relays.
Also the doors have the bar installed and not very well, but I do have a set of clean doors that are untouched or I have a set of doors from an 83. I intend on using the doors from the early car for my early car though.

When I got the car the working speedo was 48k and some change. I now have 54k which is about 2 years of owning it. The motor was in another car for a short period (estimating a year) due to issues with the another motor. The chassis has sat for about 2 years. The motor had gone to Jones autowerks in San Antonio, TX for some work due to a spun bearing where it was taken apart and repaired and SC cams were added as well as a alum pressure plate and clutch disc. This is what I understand from the PO prior to me having it.
So, short answer who knows. I would estimate it has about mid to high 60k in mileage, but that's a total guess since these things don't have an usage meter attached to them...

Don't replace the doors. If it is original paint they still have the body number scrawled inside.

I didn't realize the body number is on the inside? Where is this located?

It started being scrawled in grease pencil inside the door starting in 1976. If you take off the door panel you should see it written near the top and will match the body number underneath the knee pad under the radio. Not sure when they stopped doing this.
