PPI completed 84 911

Well in the turtles pace that I have been advancing on Porsche ownership, I have finally completed a PPI by our local Porsche guy.

The car in question is my next door neighbors 84 ROW 911. 95K mi, he's owned it for 9 yrs and while it has needs none are deal breakers, all within my abilities as long as my internet feed to PP keeps working.

Basic oil, trans fluid, brake fl, air filter, plugs and valve adj. Sticky front caliper, turn signal replacement, and steering column bearing.

One small isolated rust spot, and lastly the seat fabric (Pasha) is shot and needs replacing. In some ways that's the biggest issue time wise. Paints tired, but can be cleaned up, maybe we should start going for the Patina look that's all the rage these days?

So the PPI said basically, a good sound fun car that can be brought in to shape with not too much work. It's had some worthwhile mods. Chip, MAF, exhaust.

So I guess it's time to start talking seriously with my neighbor.

A little weeping oil

Fabric available in Germany still.

Do you or he have an idea of how much $$$ it will take for the car to change hands? From a quick glance, I think it might be $13-16k. Assuming the issues you list are the only ones, or any additional issues are small.

Looks interesting, especially the pasha interior. Hope you go back with that if you get it. Can't tell in the picture but non-sunroof?

I think Eric lifted his finger from the pulse of the market... If you can get the car at that price, great! But I think it'd bring closer to 17-18 on the open market.

Another idea for you - pick up a second set of seats from here to swap in, and that way you can shop around and restore the originals without a time crunch or breaking the bank.

Euro car with what looks like SSI's. Pascha interior, and not common color. Person next door has owned it for ten years. Does he have history and the OEM Fuchs ?
Sell the tea tray, and the wheels. Buy Pascha material (it can be bought, there is a thread on tech) Put Fuchs on it and drive.
If its 13-16k that is a bargain !

Sell the tail and the fake cup 2s and get some Fuchs or Tele dials instead. Love the color.

I dunno. Tired paint and needs interior work? Plus some deduction for non-stock wheels?

Add to that the oil leak. It adds up to a potential large bill, IMO. And much larger if the paint is "respray"-tired and not merely "needs a thorough detail"-tired.

The paint and interior condition are what keep the value down, IMO. Neither one of those things is cheap to fix, and most folks aren't going to DIY. Heck, even the raw materials for DIY are expensive.

Remember, ROW doesn't sell well to the wider market, but does sell better among enthusiasts. So the overall appeal of the ROW part holds the value down somewhat. Marketed to the correct audience, ROW helps value, but does that help this guy? I dunno.

I will agree that the market has moved in the last year, but I think the market is moving on cars that don't need any major work. Cars that (potentially) need major work seem to be hovering in the mid-ish teens, with some mid-high teen asks. Well, if eBay is any guide.

ROW is helpful with Carreras. It's a 10%+ HP advantage over US delivered Carreras.

Why would ROW hold the value down on a car that has more HP in ROW form? I know I would give more for a ROW car with interesting interior like that one. That said, tired paint and rust spot is a big knock imo. If the fuchs aren't included that is minus 2kish$ too.

Ok so it's a non-sunroof with manual seats, which means that I can actually fit my 6'3" self into it.

I want it to drive, autox and use for track days. But it's going to beach and hopefully our local PCA club will have some fun road trips as well.

There is only one Porsche guy in town, who does the tech rep stuff for the local group, he did the PPI and so is the best resource I have after everyone on here.

Yes it's got issues, but as for the oil leak he didn't think it was much more than a seep, tho that drip in the pic looks like maybe more. He felt the engine and gear box were in good shape.

I've read the threads on the pasha cloth and looked at the sites in Germany that sell the cloth. I even have German friends to do the ordering for me. I've been told it takes about 3 meters to do the seats. I read the thread from the guy who rebuilt the whole interior of his car, and I"m not sure if I want to go that way. I am leaning towards the idea of track seats and rest the time seats.

The wheels I don't care for or about, I might keep them to use for track tires, and find some others for daily use. But there is no rush on that in my mind. I will be looking at replacing the Whale.

The good news is that I am looking at the low guess on price, so I feel like I have some room for repairs.

The car sounds like a buy to me if the price is right. Manual seats and no sunroof is just less crap on a thirty year old car to go wrong and less weight. A plus in my book.

If your plan includes some track days you want to keep the whale and add a chin if it does not have one. Also for a track car you should budget for a full suspension refresh. It sounds like a fun project if the price is right, enjoy!

The drag is the grey-market cars that got crap federalizing. To the wider market, remember.

To the enthusiast market, this isn't an issue. In fact, it's a bonus. BUT, the enthusiast market is much smaller than the wider market. So the drag is bigger than the upside, overall.

Personally, I like the way that works for those of us who know better. More car for less money. AND non-sunroof on this car? Big bonus, IMO. But to the wider market, is the lack of a sunroof a problem? Maybe. So that's where the valuation on this car is a bit troublesome.

To return the car to its as-delivered state may take a LOT of cash. BUT - since the OP has no intention of that, this car could be a very serious bargain for him. Especially if it is mechanically sound, and only has presentation issues. Especially for the intended use.

Thanks Guys, I need to get a hold of my neighbor now I guess. It seems like you all affirm my thoughts that it's a bit of a wild card without a binder of records, but still a good value that will allow me to have my first Porsche.

I have to wonder how much federalization that car even got. Look at that back bumper. It isn't a US bumper unless my eyes are playing tricks on me.

I got a friend who has a 1984 ROW car, it's a targa with low miles 67k, but who knows for sure the speedos are changed from KM to MI right? I almost bought his, nice straight car with no rust and rare color and interior, he wanted $17,500. So that could be a data point for you.
