value of my friend's 1983 SC?
A close friend owns a 1983 SC sunroof coupe, burgundy over black. He's moving on, probably to buy a Cayman, and we have discussed the sale and purchase between us. We want to arrive at a price that is fair, but he says that he will sell it to me at the "lowest end" of the market price.
The car has unknown mileage, because the odometer has been broken for four years, so we estimate it has about 160k on it. He had it painted a couple of years ago, and its a poor job. Basically needs a complete strip and respray to be respectable. Seems to run okay, but maintenance is spotty. A/C is not cold. The interior is fair, seats, doors and dash are in decent shape, no tears or cracks. Carpeting is challenged. Has a Wevo shifter and H4s. Original Fuchs, in need of refinishing. Engine bay is not tidy, but is complete. Sound pad is failing / failed. We are both lawyers, and very close friends. My friend is really not a car guy at all, and he has said he will sell it for any price that I say is the low end of arm's length transaction. I don't know if I would keep the car, as I have two P cars right now, and an Alfa (and the daily drivers). So, it might be a fix and flip, but that would not bother my friend. Anyone care to estimate the low end of value on this car?

How's the motor? Any rust on the car?

Motor sounds good, but no testing. No rust. No driven in snow.

The paint is a pretty big one in my book. A paint job worthy of the car, even without going concourse is a very big ticket item. That car with nicely aging original paint would fetch $14k is my guess, so with the paint problems, yeah 9-12k feels right.
What type of Alfa do you have? Restoring a 73 GTV and estimate I'm looking at a ~5-8k paint bill and the car will be delivered to the painter as a shell, 100% stripped.

I'll agree on the $9k-$12k price range. Say a really nice SC is $20k, then back out refinishing prices. $5k-$7k for paint, $1k for carpet, $? for engine work.

Thanks for all the input. I was think more on the 8-9k range, so I think that's were I am going to be.
@r-mm - My Alfa is a 1966 Guilia Sprint GT - also getting stripped right now for paint. I'm going to yank the drivetrain as well, but not the suspension. I did that on my 66 911 and it was a PTA to get a shell around without wheels. The GT's / GTV's are really shooting up lately (I saw a stepnose listed for $90k on Hemmings recently) - and I think its related to the price of early 911's, which have priced some people out of the market, and so they look elsewhere. I'm wondering if the price of early 911's is going to push 74-89 cars up as well, or maybe its already happening.

The price increases on the early 911s are giving all the aircooled cars a boost, IMO. I'm smacking myself for not buying that stepnose a decade ago for $4000. It needed paint, but was rust-free and complete.
![]() Your idea of $8-9k is pretty good. I'd say $9k is closer to reality, and that the car probably needs $10k to be a very nice car. |

Don - I have Stepnose envy. Pretty sure it is the worlds best looking coupe this side of six figures. Know of a beautiful 1965 Giulia Sprint GT for sale, cheap, but needy as can be and I'm already in deep on my 73. One day.

My first fun car was a '64 Giulia Ti. Not as sporty as the step nose GTV in theory, but that was a fun car to thrash about. It wasn't worth much so I could drive without worry. I didn't even source the missing air box, just ran my mom's panty hose over the intake...
