The thing that kills me is that you complain about my mechanical/cosmetics comparison, then re-iterate your same BS line about rebuild costs to help me prove my point.

Really, is all you have upstairs REALLY pudding, or what?

Either you want a 911, or you don't. If you don't, for the love of GOD, please move along. If you do, then stop being an idiot and comparing them to modern cars.

Great post

I posted the following in another thread, and I think it succintly encapsulates the OP's question of when a 911 is no longer worth it:

I guess I'm not interested paying "new car" prices for a 25 year old DIY hobby car.
When I buy a DIY hobby car, I want to pay DIY hobby car prices.
Yea, I guess that sums it up.
The dissonance I was having is that I was approaching this as a hobby car,
where it's really crossed into collector car territory (or a mixture of both, in reality).

What defines a "hobby" car?

Buying and restoring/modifying cars is almost ALWAYS an expensive proposition.

You maybe get 50 cents on the dollar for any work you put into a car.

What makes it a hobby is that you derive pleasure and enjoyment from the process. Of course you have to weigh the expense vice the enjoyment derived to determine whether it is "right" for you.

If it isn't right for you, then fine. But that doesn't devalue the investment of time & resources others put into it.

Price owning a horse. Or actually racing cars. Or owning any kind of boat.

Hobby or driver car is something I pay $10k for, and invest another $10k into.
Investor or collector car is paying $25k and maybe putting in another $25k.
Obviously, this is a personal and highly subjective definition.

Then you probably need to readjust your thinking.

Given your definitions, the only hobby Porsche's I've seen in this price range are old water cooled models, older Boxters and 914s. Most of the older water coolers and 914s at this price (or slightly more) are pretty well sorted and shouldn't need another $10k investment to keep them on the road.

The investor or collector car price point you indicated is a bit short on the initial ante from a 911 perspective these days. This is fast becoming 912 territory now and the bottom of the SC/Carerra range.

Yes, that was my point. 911 is now become more of an investor/collector car than a hobby/driver car. Nothing wrong with that, just making an observation. Most people don't drive the pants off a $40k car. They garage them.

Not 911 drivers

Wrong there pardner. Most folks here drive em hard, fix and repeat.
This right here.

How many Ferraris have over 50k miles, much less over 100k miles?

There are P-cars for sale all over that have 150k, 180k, 200k+ miles. That means that people drive the heck out of them -- not just because they are fun, but because they are generally reliable, and affordable to drive that much.

If they were as fragile as PML imputes, no one would log over 100k in one.

Just think of all of the base model 3-Series that aren't driven and garaged because of that lofty $40,000 price tag...

You mean the ones that are out of warranty and broken with an owner who can't afford to fix it? Late model 3 series are where Midyears and SCs were five years ago, in ill repair no man's land.

I guess I got a hell of a good deal then, paying $7500 from my dad for my 83sc. lol
