912E Value
With the changes in market values of air-cooled 911s and swb 912s, I'm trying to figure out the value of my 1976 912E. I do not want to sell the car anytime soon but eventually I want to find a 911 and I need to figure my budget with the value of my 912E in mind. I'm getting concerned that the 911 values are taking off and I don't want to be left in the dust.
Here's the rundown on my 912E that I have owned for 3 years. 2.0 ltr FI 5-speed Sunroof Power windows A/C car but the components are removed and stored No rust 16" fuchs Turn-key and runs great. Could be a daily driver in the right climate. I would describe it as driver quality condition. Exterior is an average quality repaint that is probably 20 years old in non-original midnight blue. Car was originally silver. The paint shines and is not faded. It looks good from a distance but it has chips, scratches, and minor dings throughout. Could use a proper repaint or could be driven as-is. The original chrome and silver trim is worn and pitted but luckily not painted black. Most of the rubber seals have been replaced. No rust. Doors shut with the "ping" sound. Has 16x6 fuchs and is slightly lowered. Flag mirrors. Interior is really nice. High-back seats have no tears and minimal wear. Door panels are in good condition too. All gauges work correctly. CD player radio not original and speakers added many years ago. Three spoke wheel with recovered leather. Carpet is good. Headliner is perfect. No leaks. Mechanical condition is great. Engine was rebuilt about 5 years ago (have receipts). Adjustable aftermarket fuel injection. Starts good either cold or hot. Sometimes it takes two cranks when cold. Revs smooth. Shifts through all gears smoothly and clutch is strong. Brakes work great. Good tires. Optima red-top. Leaks some oil. Heat is weak. 152k mi shown but not sure if this is actual. I have records for the car dating back a little over 10 years. Includes engine rebuild and fuel injection system. Was in Nevada until sold to Missouri owner prior to me in 2002-2003 timeframe. The car looks straight, but due to the non original color and engine mods I woud say 12.000 USD give or take.

You want 911.I would put a nice 3L and sale the engine .You have solid car and you know the car.It would be easier than start again find a car than probably do some work on it.

I have first hand knowledge of another sale at 15k and one more also at 12.5 but that last car needed a RMS and a few minor wiring issues. As much as I'd like to drop a 3.0 into it, I'd be afraid of the snowball effect...."while I have the engine out, now's the time to repaint and while I'm at that, reanodize and chrome the trim work...." Karl- My 912E would have been the clone of your former silver 912E when it was new. Looks good in silver. It's a shame that mine was repainted blue in it's past. |
Another thing I've noticed about 912E's on ebay in the last couple of years is that they get a ton of bids. So, while we are all speculating about what your car is worth, another data point is the completed auctions on ebay that you can find easily enough. My two cents - having watched this trend since I got my car in 1998 - is that your car is in the $12.5-$14.5k range and that it will sell quickly as long as you can offer enough info on how to operate/maintain that injection system.

I also have noted 912e's having many bids on ebay. There seems to be a lot of action on these cars in the past year. The original fuel injection seems to be a big plus to buyers.

It is very desirable to Europeans because it gets way better gas mileage than a 911. A lot of that bidding action is from overseas.
And with the lightweight and 7:31 final drive it's not the dog it is often painted as. Mine was every bit as quick and nimble as my '68 911T was. They are good little cars that have a unique niche in Pcar ownership. There are times I wish I hadn't sold mine. |

Having had different 911s I was actually very surprised with the E when I got mine. Nice little light cars. |
It's white with black interior but I have Recaro SRD's in it. Sunroof coupe. I agree about the lightness. There's not a whole lot of top end to the 912E but with the lightness and the 7:31 r/p, they are fun for scooting around town and canyon carving for sure. And I've gotten nearly 600 miles (as I recall) out of one tank of gas. I could be crazy about that but it is the number stuck in my head.

Well, again I could be misremembering but that is what I recall. And it was back when I first got my car and it had - gasp - a 32/36 progressive weber on it, and I went on a road trip (lots of highway miles)....

I'm not doubting. I'm at 5000ft and mine had an exhaust leak the whole time I owned it. I know I wasn't getting maximum mileage out of it.

I just had a whole custom stainless header built for mine by A-1 in Santa Ana. It's gorgeous and the car runs way better (more power) than I ever had before.

With the 20 gallon fuel tank and 30 mpg, 600 miles should be doable. My car has never done this, I blame the aftermarket FI.

I wonder if they will ever be worth more than a comparable 911S. Asking prices for nice original driver examples lately are around 12 to 20K USD with pristine examples going up to high 20es.

I would take the position that a 912E is worth equal or more than a '76 911S in similar condition/miles/originality.
