Backdating an update
This seems like a car with some potential, but I'm not entirely sure what is involved. This is a '72 911T sunroof coupe that was originally Viper Green, but has been "updated" to an 80's Carrera (seller claims SC, but the valance looks like a Carrera) in a rather unappealing (to me) purple color with tan interior. I'm greatly disturbed that someone would have done this, but here we are.
![]() ![]() ![]() Now, I know what it takes to convert a later model into a long hood car, but what about going the other way? Would they have had to cut the front "core support" area (if that's the correct term on a rear engine car)? Seems the only way back... or the proper way at least, may require a parts car. Rear width is different as well isn't it? I would love to tackle something like this, but I am a commoner and fear I may run short on funds on a project like this. ![]() Asking price is $19,500. |

'72 t
Viper green is one of the great signal colors, and a '72 with the forward oil tank is one of the most sought after of the series (and no ugly late '73 rubber bumper over riders) - of course it's worth saving. Is the engine and transmission matching?
Having the money to buy it and then restore it may be expensive though. With the wacky body changes and the full color change it will probably be quite the project. Be sure and check the tub for crashes - it may have been "updated" following a crash which I hear was a somewhat common practice. I'm not sure what a nice original SR equipped '72 T Coupe is going for, but I'd guess at least $60k or so. It's always easy to spend someone else's money, but at least it would not be some silly hot rod project that you dump $75k into and it's only worth $10k to a future buyer... |

You need to look closely at the frunk and see if the nose has been clipped. The hood latch has been relocated. The question is how? It can be done a few different ways and as mentioned was frequently done in response to a crash. I passed on a '68 S last year that had the car clipped all the way back to the gas tank.
I would probably leave the rear "hips" on the car for the ST look. I would however like to see a right side picture to inspect the oil filler. Was it left? Was it removed? You will need hood, fenders, bumpers, and rear center panel. A ways down the page there is a member asking for the value of his "kit". Consensus was around $5k. You will also need front sheet metal to move the latch back. |

I'm kind of shocked at how thorough the update was. Someone really hated that '72 look. No signs of what it used to be until you look under the front hood. Really sad to see.

Yep, they used the SC oil tank. This car is about as much of a bastard as the '68S I walked on. It was similar money and went to someone on the board. But there was just way too much to be reversed. I'm thinking this car may be the same and is better suited to someone who owns a shop or someone in Europe who is ready to invest more money than we would over here.
It would be $30-40k to make that car right. Not worth it IMO. |
