What is a reasonable value for my 68 912?
As earlier promised , I have a new thread showing my car which I'm considering selling. It's not perfect, but here it is. Mechanically; weak first gear sycnhro, sputters a little on startup (jetted lean for my altitude 5000-6000 feet), cosmetically, some touch up areas of paint (paint job over 20 yrs old), some minor rust repair to rocker area below both doors and passenger side fender, No return of rust in last ten years, 3 inch crack in front piece of dash ( 68 is a two piece), one inch rip in knee pad by glove box, some wear of drivers armrest, minor dings, chips and scratches as expected with use. I just added Hella fog lamps yesterday (not Porsche OEM style), but no pics yet. Currently running Webers with original 061 dist. with Pertronix igniter. Driven less than 3000 miles in last ten years. Used for special getaways and light neighborhood cruising. Odometer stopped at 67310, and was immediately sent to a guy in Manassas, VA for repair. Current mileage under 68k. Photo link 1968 Porsche 912 - Imgur. Welcome all honest assessment of my cars value, if I can bear to part with it. Thanks for any advice and for looking!

Pricing
The value depends on who on this forum you ask. But don't take any estimates seriously, since this forum has no influence on what you ultimately sell your car for. Put your own price on it and roll the dice.
![]() Really though, there are a lot of knowledgable guys on this forum, others are out of touch with the real world, but have good intentions. Check the internet for car similar to yours and then price yours higher. A lot of forum members from NVA can give you a better idea of local market. Also depends on how quickly you want to sell. Need to think about timing and $$ you put in to it. It may be wise to sell before you get upside down. Good luck. |

Longhood SWB cars have been going nuts the last couple of years. The primary issue is rust. How much rust the car has, and where, really determines the value. The 912s have been lagging a little, but have come up in price nicely in the last year. If the car runs well, with no mechanical issues, $22-26k.

I hesitate to offer a value because I'm really unsure of how quickly the SWB market has been running up the last 6 months. But I think you would be giving it away and significantly underpricing it at $25k.

Response to info and questions re:1968 912
I posted some 90+ images on imgur. Will see why all did not go and will repost with link to folder. First five numbers of Vin 128031. Let me know what value that knowledge is. Porsche registry info tells me its a 68. Original color per plate on door jam was Bahama Yellow. When I replaced rear signal gaskets I could see some original color. I have had some PM sent to me and appreciate the interest. I have considered replacing the passenger seat bottom cover, and still may do so. Have seen vinyl replacement cover available on EBAY. Although the car runs fine and accelerates well, if I can find a shop I can trust, I may have a compression/leak down performed. Any prospective buyer deserves that information. Besides, since I haven't driven it frequently enough, I would like to have that info to help determine the price. I would expect any prospective buyer to conduct a PPI, and in a small sense some you responders are providing a little pre sale inspection with your suggestions. Greatly appreciated! Keep the comments coming.

I believe the 68 also had side marker lights. I did not see those in the picture. If someone is looking for original, that might hurt it a little. You said the paint job was 20 years old and they might have removed the lights then. You still have the 68 door panels that were for that year only. I think the prices offered in the $20's seems about right

If it was a euro car the markers never would have been there. What's the engine type and number? This will tell us.
The color change dings it a bit but the original color is a great color that I suspect someone will want to take it back to at some point. |

response re:68 912
The engine number/ case third piece number as I recall indicates engine is from a 69, so may detract from value not having matching numbers. Will post number when I return home. I think markers were removed prior to repaint, but I didn't see any evidence of holes or wires where they would have been removed. I have what appears the original owners manual, printed in 7/67, along with the emission manual, so I think it was a US/Can model. Amazing how little I know about the car! Ten years of ownership and still learning. Thank you all! (my wife just texted me with numbers 616/40 engine type, so 69 with emission controls. engine number possibly 4093012 (hard to read clearly)

Also, the mechanical fuel pump works fine. I just installed an electric pump with a regulator, to save starter from long crank times to refill carbs between usage, as long as two weeks between startups. However, weather is turning nice. I'll drive it more and may remove pump to keep car as original as possible.

Hello
912 Porsche Guy
I have owned a few 912, they are a wonderful car. Your looks very nice, I find pictures do good and bad but based on your description it should bring the mid 20's not to say you couldn't get more. There are two on Samba at 33k and 35k....this is where good 912's are going. The 1968 is the least desirable because of odd year and interior BUT do not worry T's a moot point. Condition with NO RUST EVER OR NO KNOW ACCIDENTS TRUMPS ALL....yes engine rebuilt and good interior is a plus but the body will drive the price. Cars that claim to be RUST FREE usually are not, but a true no rust original car with original pans and caps will constantly go up in my mind. |

Non matching engine is a big ding. Removed side markers hurts a bit too. Maybe $25k isn't so far off the mark after all the dust settles.

I too am amazed at increase in value of the 912's. However, just allowing for inflation, and not factoring in condition, $4900 in 1968 (approx. cost of a new 912 then) is the same as $33, 685 in todays dollars, so 30 - 35k is actually not unreasonable. I doubt my car would bring that, but as demand increases and supply dwindles, market forces always win out. Absurd, I, know, but it is what it is.

For 30k you will have to find the right buyer who have no concern about matching number right color rebuilt the weak first gear side marker(650.00 ) and other things. The right buyer is the one who will enjoy just a nice ride.
