What is a 1973 911T Project worth?
 

I have been offered a 1973 911T that has not been driven since ~1988. It has 28k miles. It is two owner with the current owner having it since 1975. Unfortunately the car has spent a bit of time outside. The Targa top has no cloth and I am told he took the original targa top and had somebody make a clone back in the day which he indicated never fit quite right. The car has not been in an accident. The body exhibits quite a bit of rust. I have attached photos. The lower drivers door, hood have rust. I was under the car and the floor pans have rusted through pretty well in few places. The interior is quite crispy. Panels cracked seats stiff and crunchy. I am trying to get some basic information. I have a couple of basic questions:

1. What is the ~ value of a 1973 911T in good running condition?
2. Based on these photos what is reasonable market value of this car?
3. What is a rough estimate to get this car in good running and cosmetic condition?

Looks like a REAL project. Do some searches on this forum. There are several threads on restoring old rusty 911s.

IMO if you pay others to restore it you will be on the loosing end economically. If you are planning to do the work yourself, I hope you have huge skills and have hundreds of hours to dedicate and many thousands for replacement parts. That's a money pit, but if its all matching numbers wise you can sell it right now and make some cash. If you want to restore it, it's going to cost ten's of thousands of dollars. Go to haggerty's site to find out what this is worth when fixed up.

It's a 73 1/2, it's a CIS car, somewhat unusual.

Targa hurts it's value. If it was pristine, it would be worth almost 100k today, not sue when that bubble will burst, likely before you complete this project ;)

A decent paint job is a minimum of $10k if you do some of the stripping and prep yourself, assuming the rust isn't horrible.

Interior figure $10k and motor is at least $10k, all in round numbers, you've noticed.

So, if the car is free, it'll cost you $30k minimum to make it nice driver quality, those costs can easily go up to $70-100k if you want factory or concours quality.

1. $40k
2. $15k
3. $30k

Like sonett43 10k paint job 10k motor and cis 10k for interior. Brake line gas tank and line wiring lens targas top and seal Whell and other 10k That a least 40-45 k to do a good driver. I would say 10k for car depend on rust if you have to do floor roker front pan 15k.It worth 10-15 k

im just about done with my 73 911e targa. been a 3 year project. not counting what I paid for the car, I have over 60k into it. that's with me doing almost all the work minus body and paint. I stripped the car myself and foun someone to do body and paint. although my car will be concours, with everything being correct and either new or rebuilt. all new interior and topend rebuilt. and new bushings brake lines vacuum lines ect.... it adds up quickly. I couldn't imagine what my bill would be if I had someone else restore it for me:confused::eek:

Wow!! So far I've dumped another $12K into a car with little to no rust and which runs very well.

See if you can find the book "The Gold Plated Porsche" about a race car driver that found one our vintage for about $10K in a NYC warehouse. He decided to take apart every nut and bolt and ended up putting another $70K into it and it's now (at the time of writing) $20K!!! It's a funny, instructive and informative read. Available on Amazon for about $9.

These things tend to be black holes for checks, credit cards and cash. Good luck!

too bad it is a targa. Coupe is a lot more desirable to many people.

What is this 1973 911T Project worth? Looks to me it could be worth a couple of thousand dollars to someone who has the knowledge, money, and time to restore the car by himself to even just a nice driver condition. To go further does not seem practical because, fully restored, it would not command a top price to justify the effort.

If you can get it cheap enoufe. Just flip it the way it is. You might make a few bucks by just moving it around. Put that cash to somthing that already runs.

Thanks for the feedback so far. The engine has all of the plugs out for who knows how long. Is there an easy way to turn over the engine with a wrench to determine if it is seized. Your #2 is close but likely a little bit low. 1&3 are 1/2 to 1/3 of accurate repair cost and resale value when done. Though the questions were vague and individual definitions of done may vary.

Looks to possibly be an Aubergine car - which is a rare color. I would not part it out - especially if it is a matching number car.

Someone said $2,000 in a previous comment. I'd go higher by maybe $500, but that's about it. Recently I found a 1971 sunroof coupe in about the same shape. The front end and battery boxes were almost completely rusted out. The floor pans were gone as well. A car like that is going to take a complete strip down of all body panels, interior, seats, carpets, etc. Then the expensive parts start being bought. Sheet metal, welders, grinding, fabricating, etc. Sellers of early 911's tend to overlook these things. The current market seems to make them believe that their cars are worth $20k full of rust, but that just isn't the case. People may pay those prices for old rusted 911's, but they aren't very smart people. Nine times out of ten buyers of cars like this end up selling the project years later when they lose hope. Needless to say I passed on the '71 sunroof coupe priced at $2,500, and someone else bought it. I recently saw the car for sale again. If you are retired, and are a very good metal worker, and mechanic then $2,500 or less would be fair for this car.

924If your 71 coupe had engine and trans and complete car just in parts it was at least 5000.00 in parts.
