Need help on price guide on 72 T coupe

I wanted to get some of your opinion on a 1972 T coupe. Seems like the prices of these cars that I looked into are all over the board.

Here are some specs:

-car is a good driver
-has over 250K miles. engine and tranny rebuilt 40k miles ago
-minor surface rust near the fuel tank
-car was repainted to different color 10 years ago. Does need a new paint job
-interior is on good condition
-well documented car

Seller and I have agreed that I will pay him a fair reasonable market price. Problem is, we are not too sure what the fair market value is. His mechanic thinks the car is worth north of $45K
I have spoken to few Porsche experts (yes, everyone can be an expert) that I know. I hear low end of $22k to $50k on the high end. Few of them thinks the range should be between $25 to $30K.

I have looked at the NADA website, Hagerty and also Classic car tracker. and they seem to give indication of a range of $25k to $35k

I want to fair with the seller and don't mind paying few grand more for this car, just won't want to pay stupid price.

My intention is to restore the car to very nice driver/ somewhat a decent show car. Definitely not a 100 point concurs car.

I have noticed some great knowledge on this forum. Your opinion on this matter would be greatly appreciated.

I'd like to hear TW's input on this car. '72 is very desirable but the mileage is way high. I'm just guessing but suspect this is more like a $35k car.

By the fact need new paint job 27000.00 to 33000.00 if it not to much bondo .

total basketcase rust projects 72T i sold for 18k and one 26K one day sale .
driver 30-50K easy fast happy sale for all nice car everyone will want it

Thanks. '72s are kind of a specialty of mine. I've had 8 or 9 over the past 10 years.

My opinion is the mechanic is a bit high (not necessarily in a psychotropic way) on the price he's estimating. Only because of the color change. In the original color, with a glass-out repaint, yes, $45K. But I'd ding it $7-8K for the color change. So I'd be just a bit beyond your price, Matt, but not much. Say $37-38K.

Disclaimer: many many details can add or subtract from that valuation.


Addendum: Nearly every 911 coupe of that era I've seen has some degree of rust in the firewall/rear shelf panel and usually the seat buckets are affected as well. Judicious probing with an icepick (and the seller's permission!) will tell a lot about the rust status. That bit in front of the tank is insignificant, but there's a boxed area just forward of that that is likely corroding away. Bottom of the door striker panels is another vulnerable spot: rust comes in from underneath... moral of this story: poke and probe any pre-galvanized Porsche.

Next step is hand shake on a est selling price and getting a good look at the bottom of car on a lift.

Just wanted to give you guys some update.

I am now a proud owner of 1972 911T coupe. After few weeks of fact finding and ironing out few issues, seller and I shook hands on Monday and I was able to pick up the car this am.

I was able to get all the documentation, including window sticker, books/manuals and actual "pink slip". I had to look it twice, just to make sure. It's been some time since I actually seen "pink slip".

Thank you all for your help, especially Techweenie. Your input was greatly appreciated.

Starting to make the list of things that needs attention first and hoping to have the car restored in about 18 months.
I might take pics of the process and put it up in the tech forum down the line.

Great honor in "taking care" of this car. PO had this car since 1985.

I am originally from LA and up that way on a regular basis. Hope to see you and other long hood experts down the road.

I promised the PO that we attend few events together and that I will drop of "D Cassy" for him few times a year. We name the car after his late wife.

Um, so now I have a lead on one as well. Black, no sunroof coupe. 120k miles. Ugly fiberglass rear bumper and big ole' hunkin whale tail back there. Haven't had it up in the air, but I'm told it's a 'rust free' car. I know that's total BS, as none of these early cars are rust free, but a cursory inspection looks good. Trustworthy owner.
Seats are non original. Engine is original (yellow!) but was converted to Carbs from MFI. Runs. Transmission unknown quality at this time.

My idea would be a sympathetic restoration. Pull the engine, rebuild, sell the carbs, reinstall the MFI, get a stock bumper and engine hood, maybe upgrade the seats, brakes all the normal stuff. Paint is a 5 out of 10. Definitely resprayed. I'd want a driver, not a show winner.

If I can get this car for $25K, what do you think? I'm thinking it'll cost me another $10-$15k and a year to upfixn', so at $40g's for a hot driver, am I still in the game?

I'm all ears TW.

$25K is where the market sits on the car as described. Depending on how you spend the additional money, you should be okay. The market likes proper wheels, seats, etc. but what I like to do sometimes is run what I like on the car and accumulate and store those "proper" parts for when I eventually put the car on the market.
