Why has this car been for sale since Feb ?
'84 coupe with 101k for $25k
1984 Porsche 911 carrera Nice looking car. Has not sold for months. Price doesn't seem that far out of line. Any guesses on the story? |

Accident history, no documentation, bubbling paint (hints at corrosion), non functioning a/c, barely-functioning heat, worn interior, missing tool kit, and makes mention of a significant oil leak all while being priced at the top of the market for an '84 of its mileage.

Nice work.
I thought every 3.2 has bad AC I also think mentioning that it was once in rough shape is a biug turnoff. No one wants to know the car was neglected at some point. I also think lots of work scares people off. It's the huge irony of the used car market. If you replace 100 things, people think it's a lemon. If you replace nothing, people think it's a perfect car. He's better off removing that list, even though it's a plus to a savvy buyer. All the stuff you definitely won't need to do anytime soon. After all that work, why not change out the return tubes? No one likes inconsistency. |

By the time you finish all the body work your going to have to paint the whole car. Looking at 5-6k for decent paint. Plan on stuff breaking when you take it apart as well.

Exactly what amount of rust on the body is normal or acceptable?
Are you saying if there's even a single rust bubble, it's a deal breaker? |

So he loses the entire folder which contains the entire history of the car, which by reading the whole ad you can pretty much forget the entire thing he says in its entirety because who knows if he's making the the entire thing up and without paperwork who knows or cares? That's why it's still for sale. Just another story for the books, ahem, folder that is now lost.

No paperwork really crushes resale value that badly, eh?
You just need to discount all repairs that are claimed, unless you can see for yourself the part looks new? I guess that can be a place where for the right car, a savvy buyer might be able to find a deal that no one else will touch. |

This really depends on the buyer in question - personally, I don't care one bit about the presence or absence of maintenance/repair paperwork (not a buying factor at all for me). That being said, I have a great deal of mechanical experience, so can assess the condition of a car on my own and don't need "proof" from a seller . . .

This is also dependent on the buyer's willingness to spend time and money making the necessary repairs . . . 99% of the time, a visible rust bubble on the surface indicates a significant amount of rust below it that will require cutting, welding, finish and paintwork to fix correctly.

Are 911's like any other car in terms of a rust bubble meaning massive rotting underneath?
I have never seen such an extreme aversion to a small rust spot on any other car forum. Elsewhere, people would not pay much attention to a small rust spot. Grind it out, bondo, and get it color matched. Here its a showstopper. Why? |

One spot is no big deal. I think this car had 4-5 spots and a damaged quarter panel. You can only blend so much. No shop is going to partial refinish 4-5 differant panels. This car will need to be a full paint job. Or just patch it up and enjoy it the way it is.
