Price an early 1960s Ferrari tool kit and tell us what you find.

I'll even help you:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Ferrari-275-Tool-Kit-Jack-Roll-Bag-Tools-275-GTS-GTB-OEM-/151293380860?pt=Vintage_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessorie s&hash=item2339c9c8fc&vxp=mtr

$18,000 -- and most of it appears to be reproduction -- including the tool roll itself.

My assumption is that the concours world is inhabited by extremely wealthy people with clinical OCD.

Maybe that is unfair.

Being unfamiliar with that game beyond what I have watched on Velocity TV, one wonders how many deductions you take from a concours judge for your reproduction tools in your reproduction roll that you paid $18k for.

It would be a big hit, believe it or not, in a top concours like Pebble Beach or Amelia Island. Everything needs to be OG/stock and in great condition.

You need a lot of crap with you to keep your Ferrari running apparently. Not too surprising. At least there are no machine tools in the roll

So -- they grade these cars on a 100 pt scale.

Do you lose 1 pt per tool that is wrong or missing?

Or is there something like a 3 point deduction for an incorrect/reproduction/incomplete tool kit? And 5 if missing totally?

I guess I could google it myself, couldn't I?

All is relative. If you are a Wall Street crook who "earns" a couple of billions a year then buying an expensive tool kit is like buying a pack of gum for normal people.

I'm not a big concours guy myself so IDK, just going by what I've heard or read over the years.

After googling this question for a bit, the answer appears to be that there IS no clear answer, and it varies by marque and the specific concours or show.

I found one reference for Ferrari judging that indicated up to 4 points could be deducted for missing tools, manuals, and jack etc. But no reference to sub-deductions for originality or completeness.

For Mercedes, it was a 1 point item -- with deductions in 1/4 point intervals, with no clear indication of what cost you what.

I found this Porsche Concours guide for Zone 8 of the PCA.

http://www.zone8.org/assets/docs/ConcoursJudgesManual2012.pdf

which has this to say about it:

Quote:
Porsches are usually equipped with tool kits when leaving the factory and these kits may be examined during judging, except in the Wash and Shine division. Since originality is not a judging criterion, then no deduction should be given solely because the tool complement present does not match that specified in the owner’s manual. A practical approach is to expect a reasonable assortment of tools in good condition to be contained in the kit.
And for deductions for tool kits:

Quote:
Judges may look for:
Presence of tool kit including reasonable selection of tools and spare fan belt,
Dirt and corrosion on tools,
Dirt or discoloration of tool kit pouch,
Presumably Pebble Beach is a little more exacting.

Since the google is less helpful here than I imagined, any first hand knowledge would be appreciated. Its not that I care THAT much…but now that I have started looking, I kind of want to get a more informed answer than I can find myself.

I do know that the price of that complete, original 356 tool kit is what they've been worth for a while. I used to go to the literature and memorabilia show up until a few years ago and they were always shockingly expensive. It sucks to think of all the cars missing their tools because some turd pirate pulled them out to sell on eBay.

I remember that good repro 356 tool kits, (from Japan), were $1700 or about.

My car came without a tool kit, and I've hemmed & hawed about whether I should buy one.

Last year it seems like you could pick one up for a 3.2 around $150. Now what you get at that price is a rusty, incomplete mess. They are selling new OEM kits for $400 or so.

The only piece of it I really needed was the spanner for the alternator fan -- so I bought that from Pelican.

Maybe I will spring for it eventually, but everytime I think about it, I think of more important things to spend the money on. Like maybe new bushings.

Colb,
I call you out for feeding the troll. I didn't look at his link. You started this discussion. You are a troll feeder.

Yeah, Matt. COLB probably shouldn't respond directly. Only to correct the lies that PML dishes out.

PML's traffic has decreased significantly. Because people are ignoring him or changing the subject.

What? Who?

What was the original conversation about?

I was talking with speeder about concours deductions for missing or reproduction tools….
