Part it, fix it, sell as-is or what...

Hit the tire wall with my 78 SC, damage to left front fender, hood, FG bumper, and tub moved back enough to cause a crinkle by the pedals. Door still closes but rubs, windshield cracked. I know it can be fixed but would rather avoid spending more $$ on her, I can also buy a roller and rebuild but not into it. Here is what the car contains -

Drive train - Bottom up rebuild of 1987 3.2L engine 3/14, all bearings, polished crank, new racing chains, new steel studs, all new ARP rod bolts, balanced, fresh heads with race valve springs and titanium retainers, new DC cams, injectors, new Patrick Motorsports lightened steel flywheel, Rarly SS headers, serpentine belt kit, etc. etc.. Only 2.5 hours total on the motor including dyno tune and custom chip by John Behe, giving 226 HP at the wheels (have sheet) at very conservative A/F. ECU completely checked/resoldered/modified for 89 28 pin chip by our own Ingo Schmitz. Transmission rebuilt with same 1.5 hours on it, new 2nd and 5th gear sets to match 84-86 US Carerra spec, Wevo shifter and coupler. New Sachs clutch disc, clutch itself is a year old. Simply the best of everything you can do and remain legal in PCA Stock E class.

Suspension - ER Polybronze all around, new monoballs in the trailing arms this year. Bilstein front struts with monoball top mounts, all shocks custom valved, new or rebuilt by Bilstein winter of 2012. Saunders hollow TBs, 35mm rear 24mm front. Smart Racing adjustable sways front and rear, complete spares kit (new) with one of every part. Engine and transmission mounts are Wevo semi-solid.

Brakes - NEW, not rebuilt (approx 90 minutes of track time total) Carerra calipers, rotors, and all new SS lines.

Wheels - Two sets of Jongbloed 15" Aero wheels in excellent condition with useable Hoosier R6's.

Body - Sunroof deleted (Fenn Lane steel panel), Saftey Devices cage welded in, bolted together, 2012 Sparco Pro ADV containment seat on custom lowered mount with Schroth Hybrid (HANS) harnesses. New Porsche Aero mirrors, one mounted, one (kit) new in box, Wink 5 panel rear view and adjustable spot mirror.

Data - AIM Pista MXL, throttle position sensor, in-line brake pressure sensor, steering position sensor, AIM Data Hub and USB key.

Accessories - I/OPort Camera mount and drink bottle holder, 12 qt Coolsuit cooler, Coolsuit helmet blower.

I would like to sell this as a whole to someone that will either rebuild or transfer to their tub, like to hear some ideas...

I think the best ROI of your time & money would be to pull the motor & transmission & sell them separately, then sell the tub to a breaker.

You could pull the performance bits & brakes and part the car and make more money back, but that is a significant commitment of time, labor, & space.

Not sure how much you might get for the suspension components that have suffered through a wall hit -- I'd be suspect of the front stuff, anyway.

Wheel never touched, the hit was almost a perfect 45 degree and the tire band (surrounding the tire wall) absorbed most of the impact. The damage is relatively minor for a race car incident, just will require some frame time and $$. I have seen a LOT worse back racing... thank you for the reply!

What's the insurance on it?

Not sure what your coverage is, but if the car is considered totaled by the insurance company, you could take whatever you get from them in settlement, buy it back and send it up to Damon at Series911 to have the tub straightened.

I'm surely out of my depth here.

Given your experience, I expect you already know all the implications of the different choices -- and your struggle is convincing yourself what you want to do.

Rereading your initial post, perhaps this is a "feeler" thread, "testing the waters" to see if someone wants to take the dilemma off your hands, and maybe provide some funds a new project.

If you are really torn between, sell, part, or fix, maybe you should list out your priorities, and then tick off the costs & benefits of each scenario?

It was damaged in a race, not a street car.

I was just thinking out loud, turned into a spec list which I figured I would have to do anyway. Parting it out it would almost make more sense to swap it into a new tub, which I won't do. I did the sunroof and seat base, not small projects in themselves and not doing that again! Not to mention rewiring in the AIM system, having a new cage installed, and on goes the list. It's really between parting it and having her fixed and selling ready to race. As for the "feeler" part, the list will go into that sort of post some time in the near future.. along with my Thule 24' aluminum enclosed trailer, will go as a package deal if possible.

sell off the big stuff (drivetrain, wheels, data, torsion/sway bars) and scrap the tub. You'll probably get 130% more for the big ticket items than you would from someone willing to take on the unknown project.

The engine alone should easily crest $15k....maybe more, I have no idea where the market is for a completely fresh stock-spec E motor (but I bet it's big).

Part out the major stuff like engine and gearbox and then dump off the tub motivated to either put the parts on their own racecar project or part it out.

For me parting out the whole car would be about as painful as removing my own stitches. It would just hurt too much to slowly undo everything I had done.

The sound money is in selling the drivetrain. And the emotional release is getting rid of the rest as a single unit. Like pulling a bandaid. Rip it and it is gone.

And I'm sorry for your loss. I know this can't be easy.

Thanks Matt, and your 100% on point, the best case scenario is someone buying the car, trailer, spares, and having her fixed and racing her again... She is a winning car, kept me on the podium for just about every race we were in and with this new motor will keep her there with a new drover. I just don't have it in me to deal with it I guess, that's what it comes down to. Thanks for the insight and compassion...

Having watched your racing career with this car from afar (and a couple times up close) I can only imagine where you are at right now. It's like having to put down a dog. Part of the family really.

Hopefully one of the CT or NY PCA locals will take the car and resurrect it.

Regards,

Matt

I would like to see her fixed and raced again, she is now up on my lift awaiting inspection from my mentor and THE guru of 911's, Dan Jacobs, to come by and assess her. If I fix her it will be 100x harder to let go, and that decision is already killing me....

LOL!
Dan infected me close to 9 years go. Drove in for my then new 05 997S's first oil change, next thing I knew I was on the track at Watkins Glen, 3 months later picking up my new fully race prepped G car to learn in... His shop is 15 minutes from my house.
