Proving my point:

I've said before on this forum that there are plenty of early 911 owners who do not visit web forums like this and have no clue what their cars are suddenly worth. The flipper's wet dream is to find these individuals and buy their cars for 2008's price, or less.

I just came from a social gathering where I was surprised to see some real sweet metal in the lot, mostly music people and wasn't expecting any gear heads. First I see my buddy's 340 6-pack Challenger, (drummer for DKs), and then a 1970 440 6-pack GTX in really nice restored condition. Always cool to see these beasts being driven as weekend rides.

With all of the bright colors and racing stripes, I almost missed the little red 911 nestled between other parked cars. Walked over to find a nice '69 911E coupe, nearly a perfect twin to the '70 I once owned. Looked very original and clean.

Met the owner when we were leaving at the same time and struck up a conversation. Turns out that he bought it at the Pomona swap meet 20 years ago for $5k. Really nice guy but by his own admission, "not a gear head". The car was, and still is original down to the hydro-pneumatic front struts and 14" Fuchs. Nice slight patina on original looking paint, looked like it would polish to near showroom condition. Most likely matching #s with original MFI and running great.

When he told me what he paid for it, I told him that "they've gone up a little since then." Lol. Asked him if he had any clue or guess what it's worth today...because I tipped my hand that they've appreciated, he guessed: "twenty grand?"

I'm sending him the link to the Hagarty value guide for his car. I think it's a #2 car and worth about $80k, maybe more.

I felt like I did my good deed for the day.

It's a small world and if I was that kind of "short term thinking" guy, I would not have the friends I have. And that would be tragic.

A very famous film producer, one of the most if not most successful ever, had a great quote:

"If I give away a buck, I make a hundred. If I try to steal a buck, I lose a thousand."

Had a similar experience 6-7 months ago. Ran into a guy in my neighborhood driving a 66 coupe that was Bahama Yellow with 7" R wheels all around. He'd bought it new. I poked around and did some research and told him he could get about $90-95K for it (it's that nice). He was astonished, but he said: 'I'll never sell it."

He wasn't selling. When I told him that it was prob worth $50-60k, he still wasn't selling. When I tell him that it's actually worth $80k+, he prob still won't be selling.

Why should he sell something that's appreciating like that?

Well if I had to make a wild guess why someone would sell a car like that was because he might want the money. Just a wild guess mind you.

@Speeder; Well done mate ! Need more down to earth honest people rather than the self indulgent, greedy, me me me types that seem to occupy this planet nowadays.

Karma, expect it when you least expect it.

If the car was as clean as you said it was. I would've walked over to my car and grabbed $50k from the smugglers box..I need to add a little red to my collection.

You keep $50k in the smuggler's box? Hmmm...

Call me morbid but I always wonder about dying unexpectedly and someone finding all my $$ stashes. If you got in an accident and wound up in the hospital, some tow yard employee or body shop dude might hit pay dirt with your car.

^^^^remember about 20 years ago when a thug robbed Bernie Ecclestone and his big tall wife at gun point during the night, on the streets of London?? The next day the robber saw on the news that the people he robbed was Ecclestone and his wife...he shat his pants and had a messenger deliver the goods back to Bernie......this is how I am respected in my city. No one would dare to steal from me.

Actually, I was addressing you.

See, on the internet, everyone is rich and has a Victoria's Secret model as a girlfriend/wife, knows four martial arts, and is the most interesting man in the world.

But behind the keyboard, the reality is often quite different. So, I ALWAYS laugh at claims like this. And if true, that merely means you're a pompous a-hole, instead of an internet liar.

So, which is it? Pompous, or liar?
