Hypothetical SC Question

3 identical cars--color, mileage, service records, paint, body, trim and rubber condition.

What is the difference in expected sales price now and your guess in 10 years for a 1983 SC:

Coupe

Targa

Cab

Cab will be worth more. First , it's a cab. With the exception of a handful of collector cars, cabs are always worth more. They cost more new as well. As regards the 83SC model year, it was the first year in which Porsche offered a 911 as a real cab (as opposed to a targa top).

The rarest will almost always be worth more - In the case of SCīs - the cab, like blau said.

Later 3.2īs - the coupe - far less produced.

As far as I recall less coupes were made in 88 and 89 that targas and cabs? I may be wrong - will check up on it when I get home.

More but you will be looking at a decline in demand at that time for this era of car. I have a theory on car sales. At any given time the most expensive cars are the ones that were fast and famous when the current 40-50 year old (midlife crisis era) generation was in middle/high school. It is this bracket of people who have the money to buy the race cars they pinned on their wall when they were kids.

I watched it happen with my 31 Ford. My grandfather restored it when he retired. When I was very young I remember older men coming up and asking about the car all the time. They would make crazy offers on it and tell stories of how they had one in their youth. As time went on these people became less and less and now almost no one recognizes the car. As these people pass away the consumer base for a vintage car like that shrinks very fast. The prices have fallen although the car still holds value as any well kept vintage car would.

You can assume that the car will go up simply based on the facts that they are not making more air cooled 911's (yet...) and a Porsche (or any vintage sports car) will always have value to someone.

I would advise you to look at the 356 market over the past few years. As prices on the long hoods have shoot through the roof to almost unheard of levels the prices on 356's have really softened. The 150K 356 pre A has been replaced by the 150K early 911 S.

To your point, it seems that the Coupes sell for a bit more than the cab/targa although the cab/targa's are GREAT cars and as every one has always said, super undervalued. They will all be worth more in 10 years than they are now. To give an example, 5 years ago I paid 9K for a 78 Targa in ok condition (mechanically solid, esthetically needed work). I have done nothing but drive it and I could easily sell it for twice that now.

In ten years the cab will be worth 10-15% more than the coupes and targas. Coupes and targas will be worth about the same as each other.
