Crazy price on recent 71 911T Targa sale or what?
I was looking at bidding at this 71 911T Targa with extensive rust, an engine that will not run, a transmission that needs repair, cracked dash and a whole list of things that need money to fix. It sold yesterday on ebay for $28,655 ! Here is link
I really do not understand the valuation on this car. Can anyone provide any insight? Thanks

Buyer who doesn't know enough about the amount of work in restoring this poor car ? ... or maybe just has to have a gold one. Either way i have a feeling there is much worse hiding under the por15 and the paint.

Yeah -- it has rust. Expensive rust if you are paying someone else to fix it. The rear window rust probably hints at something really ugly in the rear seat pans.
Still, some of the replacement panels are included, and theoretically the front end has already been "done". This looks like a car that could be managed by a DIY guy who is competent at metal work, and willing to spend a lot of time cutting, grinding, and welding. $28k for a complete early car with original motor and transmission does not seem insane, and probably gives a new owner $20k to play with before he is under water. It isn't a "deal" per se, but nor would I call it "crazy."

Ok, my 71 911 targa looks way better than this. Is it time to sell and what is the best way to do this? Mine has a little rust in front battery areas and a few small bubbles around rear glass but nothing like this one on e bay. I will try to post a few pictures. I have a 68 911 project and 904 replica that could stand a cash infusion. Thank you for your advice

Turned down $18k for a matching numbers 71E rustbucket. Included near perfect fenders, hood and decklid. Plus a very nice ~15 year collection of parts to finish off the car. Basically everything but the new sheet metal.

The buyer of that heap is going to play roulette with six chambers loaded when he sees the nice black rust-free 911T Targa that just went up in the for sale section and on Samba...for $32K. It looks like a really nice car, no rust and straight. eBay is the way to go to sell a car these days.

We really have to take ebay sales with a grain of salt. Yes there is the occasional uninformed buyer, but most times, those high bids are nothing more than shill bidding. Less than honerable sellers often have their buddies push up the bids. In most cases, you will see that car relisted with the note "buyer did not follow thru" or something similar. Always look at the bid history. You will often see bidders with "0" or "1" bids pushing up the bids. Thats the red flag. There has been a total junker 76' targa "barn find" on there for past 6 months. With wining bids from $20,000 to $30,000, please... Always do your homework and be careful trying to base the valuation of your car off of ebay sales. The sales are just not reliable.
