In some cases, yes.

In other cases, they were added on afterwards by dealers or previous owners. Without a list of the option codes, it's hard to know. And a photo of the spoiler - that can determine potential order option vs. later add-on.

It would not have been a "whale tail", (turbo tail), on a regular Carrera in that year. They got the slightly more subdued Carrera tail. But maybe that's what you are calling a whale tail.

Post some pics if you have them.

Your Carrera whale tail should look like this. Your car should also have come with the front spoiler as well.

Your friend should have a sticker on his car that indicates the options.

This is a 993 sticker but if you find the C36 code - all the numbers after it are options. The CXX code is the country code. The 88 should be close to the same.

The three digit numeric codes are easy to find. There are dozens of code look-up sites using a search engine.

The odd-ball codes are the ones that start with a letter then two numeric characters. They are grouped options and they are a bear to figure out without a lot of digging. However, they are not usually huge $ options sets. Lots of times interior upgrades (e.g., color matched e-brake and shifter boot).

There is also an extra hood shock on OEM Whaletails. If the car only has one hood shock or a non -standard one added its likely the tail was added.
