The Cayman R has the following changes:
- AC Delete (most are optioned back in)
- Radio Delete (most are optioned back in)
- Aluminum Door Skins
- Door cards are lightweight (no storage)
- RS Door Pulls
- +10 Hp
- Larger rear wing
- Different front bumper
- Spyder lightweight wheels
- Sport buckets (holy grail but most dealers optioned them to sport seats)
- sport suspension

It can technically be duplicated without major difficulty but being a factory packaged car I think they will eventually go up in price. The upcoming GT4 will be the ultimate Cayman, that thing will be a beast.

Worth pointing out that the 'sport suspension' lowers the car 20mm.

Anyone considering investing in Cayman Rs, I've got some commercial real estate in Phoenix you might be interested in. It's a better bet than an R, and that's not saying much.

I tend to agree, the R's will hold their value better than the others but it's unlikely they will be the hot ticket collectable in the future.

I know I'm biased but I do think the Boxster Spyder has very good potential to be a future collectable.

The only ones that will be collectible will be the uber low mileage time capsules that sat under a tarp in a climate controlled garage for 20 years. They will be a relic of the final days of the gasoline era.

^^ This! If you buy a Cayman, drive the sombeach. If you want appreciation, buy Berkshire-Hathaway. Too much fun to let this most excellent sportscar languish in storage.

When I buy a Cayman it will very likely be a purpose built racecar. Napleton built 62 of them. I don't know how many more BGB, Body Motion, Deman, Goldcrest, Vision, Autometrics and many others have built. There are at least 100+ Cayman racecar conversions around the country. 7 running in the ST class Conti race I am watching right now, running 1st & 2nd with 5 min to go.

I feel this is an accurate, if slightly haunting statement.

We live in a sort of golden age of the internal combustion engine, let the uber rich trade them like stocks, the driving experience (three pedals and real shifting) is where the fun is...

You're absolutely right. I think the Gen2 cars will depreciate more slowly, and the Gen1 cars will depreciate more quickly. I say this because a buyer MIGHT want to spin the IMS wheel of money, and see how it comes up. Or not spin it and fix it, or not have to even look into the casino by buying the Gen2 car.

I like the car in the OP for the color combo, because it is different from most of the Caymans I see out there. But truth be told, I hate that color combo in general, unless it is on a drophead coupe built in Great Britain.

look at the 2.7 mag case with all its problems .
Now they all have been fixed and hardly a issue anymore....
No one even ask (all most )
I would guess that all the IMS problem eng. that will fail, or going to fail will get beyond that point.
Then what?

Then Jake Raby and Tony Callas will stop flying around the country giving ims bearing replacement clinics.

Of the racecars Body Motion has built, at least 6 have been Gen 1. I know of no ims failures on any of them. By the time the Cayman was released the problem had all but disappeared.
It's really a M96 problem, not a M97 problem. Not even something that would be part of my consideration when buying any 987, Cayman or Boxster.

I am confused (as per usual)
What does a transaxle have to do with the IMS issues?

The gearbox has nothing to do with it. My bad. My head lives in gearbox land 90% of the time. That should say m96 and m97. I will edit it.

Tiptronic ?
Ok whats your guys opinion of a automatic?
I have had my feet firmly planted about getting only a standard . The Porsche write up however is enticing.
There is a "S" available that I had dismissed because it was not a 6 speed....now I am wanting to know your thoughts? (Again)

Tiptronic =/= PDK. I'd buy a PDK Cayman. Tiptronic? Never.

While I agree that PDK is infinitely preferable to Tiptronic, either one would be a deal breaker for me. I'd still prefer a good, old fashioned manual. I guess it's a personal thing- you're buying a Porsche for the pleasure of driving it, so you should be doing the type of driving you most enjoy. For me, that means a manual. For someone else, maybe that's not so important.
