I think that's a great candidate for a spec911 racecar. I know the shop and their work and if I was about to spend $50-80k making a racecar out of it, I see nothing there that scares me too much.
Needs rockers and kidney bowls. His many longnoses need that? Lots of them. It's 1/2 to 1/3 of the price of a nice one. Looks like a great prospect for a racecar. |

the smile has metal under it that can rust. Mine warped and had to be replaced.
I would worry about the frame on that bad boy.

Funny, when I originally took for-sale pictures of our '85 911, it never occurred to me to take pics of the rockers and such. It's rust free, so was more concerned about paint dings. Car is still for sale, a few offers, but had to leave it in AZ (since April), while we work in WI for the summer. Selling it because it sits for 5 months out of the year. And, few miles when we are in AZ, wife can't reach the pedals very well.

It might be a great candidate for a race car, but I'm guessing that's not the only rot, AND I'm guessing the car is overpriced by about $4000. Unless someone is going to part it out, there is a lot of restoration work there. That would exceed the cost of a similar unrusty car. Thus, it's a part car at this point, and needs to be parts car priced. |

This isn't 2010. You could get $10k out of that car in parts in less than a week. The next $5k would be the "you worked for it" parts. And then at the end you sell the roller for $1500. Or if you go inspect it and it's structurally solid with a bunch of "cosmetic" rust, and not about to fold in half, you just drive the thing with zero concerns about door dings or extra mileage or any of that. That's an asking price. I see no reason why it won't sell for less than that. That's usually how it works.

High mileage with rot is worth $16.5k? Line it out for me, because with this car, I don't see it. |

Have you ever parted out a car? A lot of what you'd sell are things you cannot see. Wiper and blower motors. Cruise control units. And you'd be surprised what glass and sheet metal sells for. And brakes and suspension if you want to take it off its feet. Gauges. Core seats sell. Doors and door cards sell. There's a ton of little trinkets here and there that you'd never think of until someone asks you for it, and suddenly a part you never considered taking off the car is worth $20 and 10 minute of your time to go out back and remove it.
What would you sell a complete 1/4M mi 3.2 engine with 4% leakdown with wiring harness and DME for? What do you think current core value on an '84 915 is? This car is perfect for someone with a 69-73 with missing engine and gearbox. Also provides upgraded brakes and suspension while you are at it. Short answer is that I'm not going to bicker with you or waste my time lining out the exact price of every single part on the car. I spent 7 years of my life working in a facility that specialized in parting out cars like this. For a retail shop, there's easily $20k worth of stuff there. For a DIY backyard parter guy selling here on Pelican and Ebay it's more like his asking price. Wouldn't be worth buying it for a part it for profit guy. But if you have one of the above mentioned years as a project car, or a 914 you want to make into a 6? Now it becomes interesting to harvest what you need for yourself and sell of the rest to reduce your buy in price.

Because the striker panels have a natural "pocket" behind them to collect muck and road salt, the rust could be isolated. Smiles have internal rust even in otherwise unrusted cars. But $12K is about the right price for someone on the fence about fixing or parting.
Further to Matt's comments: it could take 3 years to sell off all the parts to break even at the asking price. That's a lot of storage space and labor and packing and 'breakage' (which is comprised of miscommunication, non payment and changed minds) [I once cut a torsion tube and chassis chunk out of a car over a 2-day period only to have the Pelicanhead I did it for tell me he changed his mind.]
