Backdate value
What's the value of backdates vs impact bumpers these days? I haven't seen many backdates on the market and am curious if these are trending in a similar trajectory as real longhood examples.
I'm considering backdating a '75 Targa (the car is really tired and needs a full bare metal respray). I've located most parts and I figure it's about $4K more to backdate than to restore the body to original condition. I'm thinking it's a no-brainer that the car will be worth more as a backdate and it's a cheap way for me to own a "longhood." I'm thinking of making it a replica of a '70-73 911T (keeping the narrow fenders and standard T bumpers). What do you guys think? |
Market pricing is not rational.
I would expect it to add zero to 15% market value. The upside is that you'll have a car that looks like a long hood from the outside - a car at least 2-1/2 times more valuable than a stock 75 Targa. I'm sure you're aware that the G-models have been on the rise and that original cars are highly desired in many markets. |
I have an 80 euro coupe, non sun roof, numbers matching that has been made into a 74 backdate & I get offers on her all the time which are more than I would get for her if she was as she came from the factory.
I think it comes down to what is more pleasing to the eye & of course the driving experience. I personally could never go back to a purist car now. |
Keep in mind this is a targa. I don't think they are normally as valuable backdated.

I gave a backdate some serious consideration for my 77 Targa after purchasing her last year. She came with a Euro 3.0 and I decided to install some sport seats and a sport shifter along with a suspension refresh. The result is a light, fast well sorted car that is loads of fun :D She is currently in for a corner balance, alignment and ride height adjustment.
Here is a little inspiration for you http://i146.photobucket.com/albums/r...ps563f2c9d.jpg My vote is keep it stock and spend a few $$$ on a light restoration. |
That's a sweet-looking midyear you've got there, buddy.

Patrick - That is a beautiful midyear.
Thanks all for your comments. I'm leaning towards backdating as my car already has bright trim. It seems like the easiest / cheapest way for me to get a long hood. I'll post pics once I get started on her. |
